Okay, I've really done it now! Thursday night, I played at Legends Corner on lower broadway in wonderful downtown Nashville. I never thought I would do this because it didn't (or I thought it didn't) pay enough. Well, I guess I'll have to change my tune. Not only did I make a decent wage, but had a blast cranking out tune after tune of great "Steel Guitar" country type music! Not that my playing was that great, I have rust all over my chops!
I just took the gig on the spur of the moment as a sub with the Thom Shepard Band. What a bunch of cool cats. Jason Jordan was picking some AWESOME tele. I ran into Dave Robbins who was doing the set after us. I will be back.

Sorry but I've never heard of you Dave. I thought I knew most every Steel player in Nashville.

Dave Ristrim,
it was nice running into you there.Enjoyed
talking with you even if it was only breifly.
Working Legends was a blast for me too, as I got to work with a great bunch of guys doing "real" country music. The real treat for me was getting to work with "Billie Johnson". Not only is Billie great on guitar, but he makes it so easy for us steel players. I had a ball!

Hey Dave:

I sure know who you are, and your CD, "Crisis at The Theme Park" is terrific. I particularly liked the selection The Good The Bad and the ugly. Nice work.

Glad you enjoyed playing Lower Broad, sorry I missed you.

Best Regards,
Bill Sharpe

Dave,
I gotta agree! For all the bad press Lower Broad seems to get among the players, I LIKE it! (At least, more times than not...). Thom's gig is a great example. Fun music, nice folks (on stage, at least), usually very good money by Nashville standards, and you get to be constantly distracted from your playing by Jason's completely, enjoyably over-the-top guitar playing. Plus, last time I played in there, I got to hear Johnny Hiland play guitar on one break and Buck Reid play steel on another. Personally, I'll gladly tolerate some bad parking problems for that.

Two more bonuses as well... The first is that Mike Siler's band, who usually play after Thom, always has some great steel player or another to make it worth staying around to listen. And, in either case, you can always just enjoy the honor of being served by Herb Steiner's favorite barmaid in Nashville! (For the uninitiated.. she's the one who responded to his request for a Rum & Coke by asking him what goes into one of those.... )

Dave.....will you be out on tour with the Sons of the Desert again this year? I'm getting ready to head to California to tour with Dwight Yoakam again this summer so maybe we'll see each other on the road at some point.
As for Lower Broad.....I agree with you.
It's become one of my favorite places to play. There are very few places ANYWHERE in which you can walk door to door listening to live music. And if that isn't cool enough, most of the clubs have steel players!!! And many of those steel players are very accomplished players who also tour and record with some of the best known artists in country music.
When this summer's tour wraps up, I know where I'll be heading to keep my chops up.......downtown......in the clubs on Lower Broadway. See you there!

First off,
Howdy Nick. Let's hook up sometime. Bill Sharpe, thanks for the compliments on the Cd. I am starting a new one soon. And of course, Gary Morse! Yes, I will be out with the Sons of the Desert, BUT, we changed booking agencies so I doubt we will cross paths like we did last year. It was fun while it lasted. Man, if you get at all bored while in town, give me a call and we'll do the hang thang. I'm in the book.
