Was looking thru some old steel guitar material, and was wondering the whereabouts of Sonny Burnette, and Sonny Curtis. Are they still alive?

Jerry; If you know or could ask Sonny, does he still have his E9th setup to where he tunes to an A and then lowers it to a G# opposite to the usual setup ? I was always intrigued by the way they said he did it back when he was with George and Tammy. Best Regards, Paul

Hi Paul- That is a long pull from high A to G#. I tried that way, liked to have A6 open then pedals down put you in E9. As you say just the opposite of the normal way. That way I could play all the A6 stuff, instead of B6. But It just did not work out for me.....al

Excuse my ignorance, but I've seen mention of Sonny Curtis as a steel player a few times. Is this the same Sonny Curtis who sometimes played with the Crickets, and wrote (I think) "I Fought The Law", etc, or another one? Nick

Nick, I don't think this is the same guy with the Crickets. Sonny played with George and Tammy. He played a Clark pedal steel. He and his son Rick operated a pretty successfull store in Columbus in the 70's and early 80's. I haven't seen him in years. Kenny Krupnick lives in Columbus. He is on the forum, he may know where Sonny is now.Rick ------------------ Rick Johnson

Al; Yeah, that would be a long pull ! No, actually the way I recall it, Sonny tunes his third and sixth strings to "A"s and then lowers them a half tone to "G#"s. That is what I meant by opposite of the normal way. I have often wondered how that affected the life expectancy of his third string. Regards, Paul

I live in Texas now,but I was born and raised in Cols. O. and watched Sonny Curtis play many times. Sonny is as smooth as silk and a super guy. In the early 60s I would go listen to Sonny and Jimmy Crawford playing twin steels with Donny Young(Johnny Paycheck)doing the vocals. Sonny was still playing a Fender 1000 then. I really got hooked on steel.
