After struggling off and on with the Nashville E9 tuning on my Maverick for about a year, I've given up on it and tried a custom tuning. It's a standard C6 tuning transposed up to E (thanks to Al Marcus' "Lean and Mean E6 tuning" article.) I find I can play (i.e. improvise) in an open 6th tuning relatively easily. Must be that time I've been spending on lap steel

Anyway, what's different about this tuning are the pedal changes. What I want to know is if anyone has seen changes like this before and knows of any instructional material for it? Here's the tuning, 3 pedals, 1 knee:

F#
G# - A (b)
E - Eb (e)
C# - D# (a)
B
G# - A (b)
E - F# (c)
C# - D# (a)
A
E - F# (c)

The main advantage to this tuning is that I can get every natural chord in a key in one bar position. And I get a properly voice-led ii7 - V7 - IM7. When I'm employed again, I plan on getting the Ed Naylor upgrade and adding in the E9 a + b pedals, but in the mean time, any input?

Sort of an Amaj9, more than an E6th, I think. Interesting. In some ways it reminds me of my old D69. Check out www.b0b.com/sgwest/pp7806p3.htm .

Thanks Twayn for trying that E6 tuning. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I want to thank PSGA and Bob Maickel,Pres. for printing it in their newsletter. I have been a member for over 25 years and finally got something printed, and I appreciate it. You are right on about adding the A and B pedals to this tuning! that was going to be in my next article. That is what I call the "Full Bore" tuning. It requires the addition of a couple more knee levers to get the E to F's and E to Eb's. 4 pedals and 7 knee levers would do the trick.All on one neck, All on one Tuning. A lot of C6 Tab and a lot of E9 tab will work on this tuning.No old pros are going to bother changing anything that they play so well now, but for a new beginner in the 21st century, it might be a way to go. this could be done with a single 10 string steel.In my new article, if we go with the A,B pedals, I change the bottom strings to compensate, and still get the modern 6th bottom with a knee or pedal pull, when needed. ok. we'll see. Twayn, you made my day !! al

Thank *you*, Al, for the E6 tuning idea and I look forward to your "full bore" article! In the meantime, any suggestions for a beginners primer on C6 (I'll transpose up to E)?

Check out the Johnny Cox approach in Bar Chatter.

Something else to consider (Red Rhodes Eb13)

LKL LKV LKR 1 2 3 4 RKL RKR
F
Bb
G +Ab +Ab
Eb ++F ++F -D
C +Db +Db ++D +Db
Bb +B -A ++C
G +Ab -Gb
Eb ++F
Db -C +D
Bb ++C --Ab

If that high Bb is too high, you could change it to D, or transpose to C:

LKL LKV LKR 1 2 3 4 RKL RKR
D
G
E +F +F
C ++D ++D -B
A +Bb +Bb ++B +Bb
G +Ab -F# ++A
E -Eb
C ++D
Bb -A +B
G ++A --F

It says here that pedal 1 raises only the 6th string but I think it raised 10 as well so I put that in.
Also I'm not sure about RKR. It may have lowered 8 instead of rasing 9.
