I was watching "The Life And Times Of Hank Williams"....I didn't catch the gentleman's name, but there were pics of him playing this 'lap-steel', which really set on a stand, and had different necks. I think the instrument rotated to give him a different neck. Does anyone have a photo of this? Pretty innovative!!

Don Helms......& he's still around playing gigs here & there. Last I caught was a CATV special as he was playing a Gibson "Console Grande" with Hank Sr's daughter Jed......
Quite a guy!

Actually, his daughter's name is Jett, and even though Don played with him live, someone else did on the recordings. I don't think Don ever played a 3-neck, but I could be wrong!

...I think this was pre-Don Helms, perhaps before he did any recording. The pictures I spoke of were, I think, when he was in 'Bama. The steel in question stood in front of the player on a mono-pod stand, like a mike stand, and I could see at least two fretboards, perhaps more... It was mounted as if he would 'twirl' the guitar, horizontally to play a different neck...was this Don Helms? I don't think it was a Gibson, it looked like it was home designed/made. Has anyone seen this instrument? Maybe it was, I didn't catch his name....

I trhink that possibly Doyle Turner may have played some with Hank. He played a D-8 but I don't know the brand. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

The instrument looked like it was a 4X4 block
of wood, with a fret-board or neck on each side..it was mounted on each end, as if it rotated, or spun....

Hey Dave, There was a guitar like that in the Country Music Hall of Fame years ago. I have a picture of it somewhere. I thought it was so unique.

I should have read the post closer! It was not Don Helms on the "Life & Times of HW"

Don Helms did play on most of Hank's records.
He played a Gibson Console Grande Double 8. He also played on the road with Hank.
Jerry Byrd played on a few of Hank's records.

I saw one of those guitars in the Hank Williams Museum in Georgiana, Alabama, about 5 years ago. I think that I read that it was the second of 2 owned and played by Don Helms.

Hi Dave,

Many years ago I saw a guitar like you have described, at the Roy Acuff Museum at Opry Land.

Millard "M.C." Jarrett, Clyde "Boots" Harris, Don Helms, R.D. "Sonny" Norred, Jimmy Porter, Felton Pruett,Doyle Turner, Jimmy Webster, Jerry Byrd, Don Davis,James Clayton "Jimmy" Day, and "Pappy" Neal McCormick.

These are ALL of the steel guitarist that played with Hank at least more than one time.

I'm a huge fan of The Drifting Cowboys, and I found a great website all about them!!!!! If you can't find it here, ya ain't gonna find it! Take a look!!!

Thanks abraham, that's a great site, I'll pass it on to my Buddy who is also a big fan. I think it was Neal McCormick who was playing that "twirling-steel" I was asking about....

I have heard that Don said he has had many people wanting to buy the Gibson Console Grande that he played on Hank's tunes (which he still owns)-But no one has offered him six figures yet-If you can only afford to TRY and sound like him (for much less money)-Check out the Gibson Console Grande I have for sale in the Buy and Sell section

Billy Robinson played with Hank the first time he played on the Opry. He also toured Europe in 1948 with Hank and the Opry show. On our 1999 Steel Show here in Portsmouth we had Billy Robinson, Don Helms, and Howard White all featured on the show. Howard playedEd some of the very last shows Hank did before he died.

There is still another Steeler that did some early recording with Hank by the name of Dale Lohman. He is not listed on the HW web site but I have a record where his listed on "Move It On Over", "Last Night I Heard You Crying In Your Sleep" and others that I will not name. Most of his work was done before Jerry Byrd started doing the MGM sessions. I believe he recorded "I Saw The Light" for Hank.

My dad is recording a song called "Driftin' Cowboy that never saw the light." It has almost every song title of his mixed up in a song. He didn't write it, but it will be on his next recording. By the way, My dad recorded some Country Classics (CD called "TRADITION" - If want a copy, email me) with the legendary....................Don Helms. It was a treat to meet him, and were still great friends and playin' buddies. It was recorded last year. It's great!!
