![]() ![]() Does anyone have any idea what guitar and pickups John is playing on the beautiful "HE Touched Me " C.D. I heard it was a Lashley LeGrande III with G.L 705's. Can anyone verify or correct this? Maybe John? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Martin. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() According to Bruce Zumsteg,he recorded this with a Zum that Bruce built out of some 40 year old aged maple that I gave Bruce about a year ago. Bruce and John both agree that the guitar sounds outstanding, my problem is I dont have anymore 40 year old maple?? Ben Jack |

![]() ![]() Martin, John was playing a Legrande III with L710 pickups until he got the Zum. From what I remember, the Zum has L710's on it too. John had the Zum this year at the Plant City steel show and the Emmons last year at that show. |

![]() ![]() I've tried to get John to answer this before but never got a response. On the two albums he has "John Hughey" and "Neck To Neck" he plays two different guitars. I forget which but ones is the Legrande III and the other the Zum. I bought both these albums at the same time and put both on a tape so I could listen while I drive. By now I've heard both of these albums at least 200 times each and cannot tell where one albums begins or ends because the guitars sound exactly the same. I know I could go read the CD song list to know but the point is the guitars sound the same. I cannot tell the difference in these guitar at all. When asked why he switched he only said the Zum played better but never commented on the tone. I can tell the difference on anything I listen to but these two albums. Does anybody else notice this? |

![]() ![]() I have the LeGrande III that John used to record his first CD "John Hughey". It has BL-710s on it.He used his Zun on "Neck to Neck".I asked John what he liked about the Zum over what he had played in the past--He said the Zum played so easy. If it plays any easier than the LG III I could'nt stand it. I do hear a differance in tone on the two CDs - the Zum being more mellow- I think?? Very close- John sounds like John. |

![]() ![]() David, I've got a fairly new Legrande II with the 710's too and it sounds great and plays great. I can't say I've played one that plays or sounds and better than this one as far as all-pull guitars go. John has definetely got a lock on his tone. Those two albums sound like they were cut in the same day with the same musicians. |

![]() ![]() Gentlemen if you look verry closely at the grafics on the "Neck to Neck" CD you can make out that he is indeed using a George L's pickup on his solid black Zum. |

![]() ![]() The trouble with this discussion is that John would sound good with a cigar box and monofilament fishing line for strings !!!! Both guitars sound like John Hughey to me !!! ***** ![]() ------------------ |

![]() ![]() I asked John what pickups he had on his Zum when he played a show in Alabama this past February and they were George L 10-1 pickups. As you know, these are darker than the E-66 and some steel guitar manufacturers put the E-66 on the E-9 neck and the 10-1 on the C6th. IMO, your standard formica, aluminum neck all-pull guitars tend to be too bright and it makes sense that one would want a "darker" pickup on them. Jernigan uses George L PF-1 pickups on his Zum. The PF is for Paul Franklin and I believe they are suppose to be between the E-66 and 10-1 tone-wise. Frank ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Speaking of Johh Hughey's guitar, I've been listening to the "John Hughey" CD at work a lot; headphones. It's really improved my typing speed, but I have this nearly constant urge to burn my steel guitar. ![]() Can't give John all the credit; also Herby, Joe Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Cox, and our own Bobby Lee. ------------------ |
