Topic: AER 60 amps: have you tried one?

Would like to read any comments from those who have tried an AER 60 amp for steel. They're very compact and lightweight, and are made in Germany. Carter had them set up at their exhibit at ISGC but I didn't get to try one or hear anyone else try one. I'm especially curious as to how they handled the low end of C6.

Jim, i tried an AER Basic Performer 150watt
Bass amp which sounded fine on C6.

AER does have a good rep here,(but they're not Steelers)

Hi Jim,I have used an AER 60 at both the Summer NAMM convention and at the ISGC, in the Carter booths. While I didn't play much C6th through it, I've got to say how impressed that I am with that amp. Between micing it, running the direct out - for live or in the studio, it sure is a lightweight alternative to bigger rigs. What impressed me the most... no rattles or buzzing of the speaker, like most small amps. It is not cheap... You would spend about what you would for a new Nashville 1000. I haven't bought one yet, but I think that anyone looking for a small, lightweight amp would have to put this at the top of their list. I don't know anything that could compete with it. I was thinking of using one for demo recordings (because I have never gotten a "direct" sound that I like), or for a fully miced live stage. Unfortunately, most of the live stuff I have done lately has such a loud stage volume (insane), that I'm afraid anything besides my full rig won't cut it. Hope this helps, David Spires |

Question: The AER has a "line out" and a "DI out." Are either of these appropriate for use with an unpowered external speaker? Seems like 60 watts into the built-in speker coupled with a 12" or 15" speaker cabinet might be nice.What do you guys think? Chris |

hey guys..you can thank my buddy Richard Jenkins from Minn. for introducing these amps to the steel guitar world at the TSGA in Mar 2002 at Dallas....he is an awesome "Atkins" player and found these at the CAAA in Jun 2001....we demo'd them in the Carter room and Mr Fabian took it from there.The answer is you cannot make it distort and yes it handles C6th like nobodies business....go ahead and do the Night Life thing..it'll make you step back and politely soil yourself....great amps, a little pricey but so is back surgery. If you prefer back surgery, come to Oklahoma..my wife would appreciate your business. |

Chris,To the best of my knowledge, the line out / DI out is only at line level, and would not power an unpowered speaker cabinet. It would feed something powered, like a PX 300 (but that kind of defeats the purpose, right?). David Spires |

My Compact 60 is a few months old. My Evans FET 500LV has been in the basement feeling lonely for the same period of time. My inital favorable impression still holds but I have one "tonal" observation to make. For some reason, my 6th string on E9 sounds a little plunky--seems to lack the same ring as my other plain strings..changed it without much difference. Its not a 'bad' sound but just something I noticed. Its not a detraction but something I thought I'd mention. My family LOVES it too (I think for its size and the reduced toe-stubbing associated with the AER). As I use it I appreciate a lot of the subtle aspects of it. A tuner output so there's no tone robbing by keeping a tuner connected all the time. Totally recessed handle is comfortable and gives a completely flat surface to lay stuff on or in which to store the detachable power cord...or picks and bar. A mic stand socket to mount it up off the floor. Little things like that combined with a really nice tone and a decent reverb and delay (I prefer a DD-3 to the built in delay but chose the built in reverb over a real spring Lil Lanei reverb pedal) makes it a definite keeper. I'm a bedroom player so you accomplished guys' mileage may vary. The real downside is the Compact 60 has me aching for AER's big kahuna the Acousticube II at 1700 bucks (anyone wanna buy grown kids that still live at home????). At more than twice the price of the Compact 60, I wonder if its possible to sound twice as good..Can't imagine its possible but I'm a believer. |

I tried them a couple of years ago at a local guitar store (Wildwood Music - Louisville CO). Steve (owner) was one of the first, if not the first dealer in US. I was amazed. Then tried them at Scotty's this year at the Carter booth, and again was amazed. Would like to line out to the live board sometime and see what it does, but I don't own one yet. Anyone try the Little Lanilei super 50 in a similar application (practice, or line out to a live board)? They are similar in price to the AER, and advertize clean tone.
