I really like the Blue Hawaiians, especially cuts like Swingin' Hula Girl from the Sway CD. Can anyone recommend other bands performing similar Hawaiian-Surf hybridized music that includes steel guitar?Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Cat |

I can't add anything in the knowledge area on these Kats but they are sooooo cool!! Lots of great "vintage" tones! Steels, B-3's, JazzMasters and Fender amps--at least to my ears! |

Rumor has it that Gary Brandin (steel player for the Blue Hawaiians and SpongeBob) and his son are about to release "The Vanduras". I was lucky enough to hear it and it is a very addictive, haunting blend of surf guitar and steel. Maybe Gary will give an update!! |

Cliff, if you're ever in L.A. Check the Lava Lounge in Hollywood. The Blue Hawaiians play there off and on (wed. nights I think). They even have a cocktail named after them. The ambiance of the club suits the surf, spy, hawaiian, spaghetti western stuff. What's the title of the Sway cd? Is "Sway" the title, or the record label? Don't know of any other contemporary groups playing their style. Haere mai, Steve H. S8A6[This message was edited by Steve Honum on 06 December 2001 at 09:35 AM.] |

The Vanduras CD will be out the first week of February (so I've been told) on Pascal Records. The Vanduras are very much like The Blue Hawaiians, only with more steel.=:^) I hope ya like it. |

About 95% of Gary's playing on the new CD is with a double 8 Rick, the D10 Franklin was used sparingly. The amps used were an assortment of small vintage tube amps; Magnatone, Silvertone & Rickenbacker. The tone alone is worth the purchase price.
