I'm looking for ideas for a lap steel stand. Has anyone here made one using a tripod stand or a keyboard stand? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

I used an X-type keyboard stand successfully -- it was the easiest to find and least expensive solution. It's also lightweight and folds flat. (I also have a Melobar Outrigger, which lets me move around on stage).

Because my Bakelite Rick kept slipping off my short fat legs.....I transformed my Yamaha drum stool into a guitar stand.
By placing one of the tri-pod legs directly under where the neck of the guitar would protrude beyond the round seat cushion; I then positioned the HEAVIEST and widest part of the Rick centered within that round seat cushion. I then used two very small diameter bunge cords over the guitar, one at around the 10th fret and the other over the peg on the butt end of the guitar. WORKS GREAT!
The guitar is low to the ground (if seated) and solidly mounted on the cushion which is non-skid, and the stand's leg beneath the guitar neck makes it rigid and most difficult to tip over.
It WORKED FOR ME! I had previously examined the keyboard stands but came away with a "shakey" feeling about them.

I have a great custom lap steel stand, fully adjustable black metal. It fits my Sierra laptop and a Melobar 8 string perfectly, so I would think it would adjust to most- My insane bandleader disbanded our band last week so lots of stuff's gotta go- $50 and shipping...

Ted Smith at Melobar lists a 3 leg kit for lap steel guitars on his website. Check it out at: www.melobar.com
