How do these differ from regular guitar straps? What's a good one to use with a National Squareneck Tricone? Tired of sitting down and want to join the band!

Dana,

I have an earlier version of one of these from Beard Guitars and like it a lot. Not cheap but they work well and the quick release from the headstock is a nice feature. Extra length (which you need) is one of the key features you'll find in dobro straps.

Hope you're in good shape - that's a heavy (and oh so wonderful) guitar you've got!

I have a black leather Levy strap from First Quality Music (www.fqms.com) on my Dobro. It has the extra length you need to put the guitar in the right standing position, and it wraps around the peghead and attaches with laces. I replaced the laces in mine with old-fashioned Chicago screws. It balances well and works great.

I use a 3inch wide Franklin strap.Extra length. adjustable. Suede on the inside so it won't slip and slide.

Attach it to the head with a lace or a leather gizmo with a plastic button.(Martin markets one) Put that right forearm under the strap and let it squeeze your arm a little to keep the guitar steady.

A good trick is to adjust it while in the sitting position. Then stand up and it should be close to the same.

I sure wish I had that National

Hi, Dana, Dimarzio now makes a really cool little gizmo that has a small strong plastic luggage clip (that comes apart), each end having a loop of cord attached. You loop one end through/around your headstock, the other through the strap button hole in your strap. The extra length makes any regular guitar strap long enough for Dobro and it clips on and off leaving just the one little end on the headstock. About $4.95 at lots of music stores- try Elderly.

Hi Dana:

i'm a little late to the reply party about the strap. I like the ones I get from Paul Beard, and would also suggest getting a strap-lock set-up (he has those too). Nothing like the strap coming off the button and hearing your guitar hit the floor.....

Speaking of straplocks (and I know this is a bit off-topic) is there a straplock-type thing that you can use to put into the strap-peg hole of a Martin acoustic guitar? I don't trust those strap pegs that come with the guitar. But, the hole is so big I'm pretty sure a regular straplock would not work. Any ideas? Thanks ahead of time.

Yes, there are some round plastic devices with two concentric disks that rotate to lock on a big strap button, over the tab of a regular guitar strap. Costs just a few bucks. I have one on the "big end" of my Dobro. I bought them from Stewart-MacDonald, but I can't remember any more details right now. Will try to post later.
