I need a little info from all you western swingers. I recently purchased a '55 Stringmaster T-8 (26" scale of course.) I live in a community that has one or maybe two music stores. So in my haste to get new stings on my rig, I bought a conglomeration of single electric guitar strings. I was able to get most of the gauges I needed and only had to use three different brands. Anyway, the tone is wonderful and I was very happy to discover that the string spacing is very close to the spacing on my Carter D-10.
My concern is that I'm getting quite a bit of bar noise and I'm sure it's because of the variety of strings that I have on it. So my question is, what kind of strings do you use on your Stringmasters and where can I order them on-line. Oh, I'm using C6 on the back neck, E13 in the middle, and undecided on the front neck. I'm currently working my way through Cindy C's instructional stuff and would like to hear about other resources.

Thanks a bunch,
Alan Michael

Ricky...would you recommend flat wound strings or just the standard wound strings.

Much appreciated,
Alan Michael

I'm looking for gauged flats and would appreciate any suggestions. I'd like to get them from the Forum, but those are all rounds, aren't they?

Howdy Alaska!

I have experimented with many string types on my T8 stringmaster 24.5" scale.

I prefer the GHS rollerwound pure nickel. Rollerwound is kinda in between round wound and flat wound. I also use this string on my Dual 8 short scale, and a Benoit 8 string that I tune G6. (long scale)

Check out juststrings.com. They have about everything you could want. Many mfg. many strings.

So Chris; are you saying you've heard bar noise from my Stringmaster on a recording I did??? well which one> cough it up pal...LOL and I'll pay up..
Alan; there are great suggestions on here...I like the suggestion Ron gave and of course both John's...as I believe it's important to experiment...to see what best suits your particular technique...as I believe everyones techique differs and need to find out what's best for them in the way they play.
Let us know what you come up with.
I've tried all....and I prefer what I stated above....but that is my technique and sound/style I go after.....heck I may change tomorrow....ha

I thought you meant if I heard bar noise with my playing, not yours. Oh shoot! I guess this means I won't get the $1000. Dang, and I could've used it for a down payement on a new Jeep.

The only place I've ever found individual gauges of flatwound strings is Scotty's in St Louis, but there are probably companies selling them via the Internet.
I like the d'Addario "Half-Round" strings as a compromise - kind of "semi-flat", like the rollerwounds.

I guess I'll throw in my .02, too... I use and really like the SIT pre-packaged 8-string steel sets. I get 'em from http://www.juststrings.com.

The price is right, they're semi-flat, they sound great and they seem to last, even in this Florida humidity.

Thanks for the comments gentlemen. I think I'll give the semi-flat or rollerwounds a whirl. It sounds like they would help eliminate some of the bar-friction noise. I'll ask again if anyone knows of any western swing instructional material other than the very fine Cashdollar videos. I just love that C6 stuff but I don't have a clue about playing the E13 neck. I do like the fact that the bar positions are the same as E9 so I can focus on chord building and intervals and such. But when all is said and done I don't think there is another tuning that fits so nicely with swing than C6.
