Had no luck - at least with this spelling, Roy. Jeremy Wakefield mentioned that 45 record when I interviewed him and asked if I knew anything more about him. Tom Morrell mentions him also as a boyhood influence.

Rico Turchetti played a homemade pedal contraption on the Godfrey Talent Scouts show back app 1950,,he had a deal whereas he had chains attached to his single neck steel.

He played St.Louis Blues on the talent scout
show with Archie Bleyer's Orchestra which was
the CBS house band for Godfrey. Rico took first prize that night as I saw him play his
contraption. He used many effects,,not out board effects but his own with his talented
hands. As you are aware Arthur Godfrey loved
steel guitars and he thought Rico was super
and that he was.

He played Limehouse Blues a few days after
the talent scout show and was a fine steel player. He lived in Pawtucket RI but he moved to Florida a number of years ago.

I would hope he is still with us,I dont think
I would be able to help you locate him,but I have a few friends in Florida who may know something as to his whereabouts. If I get a clue,I'll get back to you.

ok,....now I don't want to make this thread out to be "The Good Ship Lollipop".....BUT,....Jody Carver is an invaluable asset to this forum. Who else would have known that?

Not only who Ricco Turchetti is/was, but the details of his early days.

That's it...pardon me for topic drift...carry on please....

Once again EncycloJodia Brittanica to the recue! Jeremey described him as a mix of Alvino Rey and Roy Smeck. Rico - that is - not Jody. Jody is a mix of speedy West, Alvino Rey and Groucho Marx.

I think I resemble Harpo.

Andy,,Rico's guitar was custom made by a friend in Rhode Island,,he actually used chain that was used for toilet tanks. He would raise some of the strings,he could not
lower anything. He tuned to a E6th Tuning with an E on the top. He played a bit like
Alvino, using most of all sweeping chords and
very few if any indivdual finger grips.

George Barr a regular on the Godfrey show told me all about Rico. I never met him. George Barr was Halyloke's steel player and he played a multi-chord guitar. George played
traditional Hawaiian style and he was with Godfrey during the same time I was.

George was NOT Hawaiian, but Loke preffered his playing over any of the other native Hawaiians in this area. So in regard to the thread re-Jerry Byrd not being accepted as a Hawaiian guitarist per say,,neither was George Barr, but he was accepted by Halyloke
so that shoots that theory down, that Hawaiians
resent a non Hawaiian player. George was a good friend and he passed away in 1974 at age
46.

Hey Howard,,This is the Good Ship lolipop.

All times are Pacific (US)
