Topic: Galveston Resophonic Guitar on E-Bay--No Bids?

On Monday morning around 11 A.M. I saw a Galveston, electric, metal bodied resophonic guitar on E-Bay. There was 9 minutes to go and no one had bid on this guitar. The opening bid was $450.Does anyone know anything about these guitars? Roger |

They're made in Korea like most of the cheap resonator guitars currently available on eBay. The ones I've seen are pretty crummy; I wouldn't want one even if given one. For twice that amount you could get one of the Tut Taylor resos I've seen on eBay and have four times the instrument.------------------

There is also a huge glut in the market for the cheaper imports. You can't swing a dead cat cat without hitting a flavor of the month colored reso on ebay, metal models included. |

It's back, this time opening at $325.I've only seen one Galveston, and I was not impressed. From what I've seen, if you are looking for a low(er)-priced metal-body resonator you would be better off with a Johnson or a Regal. |

Caveat Emptor -- Let the Buyer Beware. Especially when it comes to buying something on E-bay. There are guys who make their livings selling cheap Asian musical instruments on E-Bay. Most of the time the opening bid is much more than what you could purchase the same instrument for at a discount on-line mailorder house, like MusiciansFriend, etc. They are hoping to catch some unsuspecting person who doesn't know much about the instrument and who thinks it looks like a good deal . . . . |

Ever played a Galveston? Nuff said. I wouldn't touch that with a 40 foot pole, LOL.
If you are wanting a "cheap" "Dobro" type instrument, I recommend the Mahogany Johnson squareneck resonator guitar. I had one for a short time last year and it actually surprised me. It had good volume and fair tone. It lacked some clarity in the upper registers, but hey, go try a new Gibson, then compare the price, LOL. Actually your best bet is to watch for old dobros. You can find them at fair prices still, once in a while. With the resurgence in bluegrass music, there are instruments resurfacing. Sorry I don't have much knowledge about the Regals, they do seem to have many fans. I got a Morrell roundneck that I really don't care for. Better yet, save up for a Benoit!!!

In cheap reso-land, a lot of folks are taking a Johnson and having Paul Beard do a set up on it, new Quarterman cone, bone nut, etc. and coming up with a pretty fine tone for little $. There are always threads about this on Jerry Douglas' cool website.

Off Topic, but does anybody else hear that Glenn Cambell song run through their head EVERY TIME they see the word Galveston??

Just made me think of Galveston Flood on Tony Rice's Plays and Sings Bluegrass recording, which had Jerry Douglas on it, to bring it back to the topic of Resophonics.Dwight |

Attended a workshop at Elderly's in Lansing Mi. saw Tim Sheerhorn rebuild a Asian reso
guitar in about two hours, Quarterman cone
bone nut and a special bridge. There was an amazing difference in the sound that guitar really came alive. The cost is very reasonable.
