DeWitt Scott was gracious enough to share with me his setup that he used on his "Basic C6th Nonpedal Lap Steel Method". The tone and sustain on the CD that comes with the course is IMO, the best I have heard yet of anybody. Here's what he had to say...

Hi JW!
Thanks for the nice comment about my tone. I used a Peavey Nashville 400 and a Goodrich volume pedal to cut the C6 Non Pedal Course.It was custom made for me by Goodrich. The Rickenbacker Frypan I used has an unusual large horseshoe pickup. Much fatter and wider than all the other Ricks I've seen. All I did was plug into the amp and pick. I do use a Boss DD3 Digital Delay on live performances but I don't think I used it on the course. I set the delay where it makes my amp sound like you are playing in a large hall - such as a church... Of course, like all the other players, I have my own touch and tone when I play. I can usually find my tone on any amp that I use. My string gauges are:

1 - E 015
2 - C 018
3 - A 022
4 - G N24
5 - E N30
6 - C N36 (also for when I raise the 6th string from C to C#)
N = Nickel Semi Flat

The Rickenbacker is the long scale or 24 1/4".

As I don't have the Nashville 400 amp anymore I do not remember how I set the controls. I do know that I put the bass knob on 10 and the treble knob at about 3 o'clock. If you have a Nashville 400 amp you can set the other control knobs at 12 o'clock and back them off one way or the other to suit your ear.

*(I was also inquiring about the difference in the 4th edition and 5th edition Jerry Bird instructional course). This is what Scotty had to say...

The wording "5th Edition" does not change the contents of the book. When we run out of books we go to the next number. 4th edition, 5th edition and now we are in the 6th edition. I probably will not vary from that number now as I only print the 4 or 5 books at a time, not 100 or 200 as I used to do. I hope that clears that up.

I used the same equipment when I cut the "St. Louis Blues" instrumental recording. (available on CD/Cassette)

Best regards,

Scotty
