Collectors Choice Music is one of my favorite stores for older music, the stuff you don't hear on the radio. Big band, country, pop, obscure psychedelic...if it's out there, there's a good chance Collectors Choice carries it. I've bought Eddy Arnold and Leon McAuliffe collections from them and been very satisfied.

Marty is (was) one of the "old heads" in the music business. My first time to see him in person was at Bob White's "Someplace Club" in OKC. He was a "musicians musician". www.genejones.com |

Jerry was also on two of the old Marty Robbins "The Drifter" series. I think it was from the 1950's.In the first one, Marty was "drifting" along in his travels, and met a steel guitar player named Jerry Byrd on a ship headed for the islands. They jammed together for about a half an hour before the ship was ready to set sail, and they went their seperate ways. In the second show, their paths crossed again on ship bound for Hawaii, and jammed another half hour of awesome island songs. Jerry played a six string resonator and it sounded fantastic! At times it almost sounded electric. He is truly the master of touch and tone! He was also wearing a long sleeved Hawaiian shirt, of which I couldn't find any when I was in Hawaii (as if the shirt would help my playing any) |

P.S.Marty made two Hawaiian albums. Al is right about the Bear Family album -- that's the one with Jerry on it. If memory serves me correctly, the other one featured a steel player named James(?) Farmer. |

Jeff, I think you are probably correct on the James Farmer call. Jimmy Farmer was Marty's steel guitarist for many years. Marty's path and mine crossed in two separate venues over the years. In the late fifty's I had the opportunuty to sit in for Jimmy on a few occasions at a Marty Robbins appearance and then years later when I was operating a business building Race Cars Marty frequented my shop often. At one point his son Ronnie had aspirations, maybe Marty had them for him, of taking over the engine building responsibility for Marty's racing operation and Marty approached me with the idea of Ronnie coming to work at my shop as an intern, learning the ropes. Just goes to show the world is a small circle.Bill[This message was edited by Bill Hamner on 21 December 2002 at 01:25 AM.] |

Good people, I like talking about Marty Robbins, That guy had more talent with music than any one person I can think of. He sang Hawaiian, Mexican , and could write songs, etc. . I have his album of Mexican songs. Marty had a passion for the old west, should of been born a cowboy, instead of poor.R.L. |
