Roger Smith of Horse Rock Records has scored a real coup here. This is the most incredible collection of steel players I've seen on one CD! I can't wait.

http://www.horserockrecords.com/bands-incredibleguit.asp

  • Gary Brandin "In The Dark"
  • Harry Manx "Only Then Will Your House Be Blessed"
  • Bobbe Seymour "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight"
  • Orville Johnson "Mardi March"
  • Bob Brozman "It Happened In Monterey"
  • Greg Leisz "Santo's Dream"
  • Tom Morrell "Steel Guitar Rag"
  • Stacy Phillips "Flambée Montalbanaise"
  • Herb Remington "Hula Blues"
  • Cindy Cashdollar "Locust Grove"
  • Ken Emerson "Ka Loke De La Corazon"

Sounds VERY interesting! and great that someone had the idea of doing it.
Any idea who "The Fugitive Steeler" is? A relation to thr "Archduke of the Dobro", maybe? "Saturday Night Shuffle" is not a tune I'd ever thought of playing on lap steel, but now I'm going to have to go home this weekend and try it...

Greetings. I wanted to thank Brad for the nice post. Since the idea for this album began on the Forum, I thought it might be of interest to some members to see how this album started and where it finished.
It's a little lengthy, so please bear with me.
Eight months ago I solicited Forum members to send me songs for a lap steel guitar compilation. I got many responses, some very good. However, along the way the project took a lot of turns I never imagined.
Besides 'bedroom' players and folks who do 'casuals' I started getting interest from 'world class' musicians like Bob Brozman, Cindy Cashdollar, Herb Remington, Orville Johnson and quite a few others. Some players turned me on to other players, some I had to talk into being on the album. It taught me a lot about patience and also how 'cool' these artists are: For the most part
their 'monster' talent is in contrast to how helpful, easy to deal with and accessible they are.
Now I'm extremely pleased to announce the 'Legends Of The Incredible Lap Steel Guitar' CD is available.
It's a thrilling collection of music featuring many of our 'heroes' and some players you may not have heard of but who will floor you with their awesome talent.
The album features a wide variety of styles (there are song styles here you wouldn't belive could be pulled off on lap!). There are some new compositions, some new recordings of 'classic' songs and some recent material that never go exposed. Overall there are a lot of songs I guarantee most members have never heard before.
The album is 14 tracks and is pretty evenly divided between electric lap and resophonic. It wasn't designed this way. I was trying to put together an album that was compelling musically and this is just the way it ended up.
The credits also list the guitars each musician uses.
For details on the album, the players and how to purchase, please go to www.horserockrecords.com.
If after viewing the website you still have questions about the CD, please email me directly.
Thanks

Bob-
Thank you. It really was a great experience and (not to 'hype' this), I couldn't be happier with the results.
Enjoy!

And let me add that Gary's cut is a cool, atmospheric surf/noir cut with great steel playing. Harry Manx is another player who deserves a wider audience. His CD "Wise and Othrwise" is one of my favorites. Cindy's playing is always so melodic and tasteful with beautiful tone - how could you go wrong with musicians like this?

Hi Andy!
Speaking of Harry Manx, If you like his playing, try to catch him live. I saw Harry at the Banff centre for performing arts last June. His one man band live show blows away all of his studio work (which is decent too). He inscribed a CD for me & gave me some advice on finding a tuning that fit my style. Great guy.

Harry just did a soldout show here a week or two ago (I didn't go but saw him at 2 outdoor festivals last summer).

Check out his link to a local radio station that streams over the internet to hear an interview and the show

I interviewed Harry for the book I'm working on and really enjoyed speaking with him. He's a real gentleman who's had unique life experiences around the world that have filtered into his music.

I just got mine in the mail today. Cool!! I'm very happy to be a part of the disc and greatly enjoyed hearing the other contributors. My faves on first listen are Greg Leisz' and Gary Brandin's moody pieces and the awesome harmonics on Kayton Robert's cut. I think I'll go listen to it again and get some other favorites! Thanx again for your work on it Roger.

Thanks Brad for bringing this to our attention, and Roger for putting it together- I just ordered this one and the Stacy Phillips, which I'm sure is a knock out CD as well. More lap steel!

This is the greatest non-pedal CD I have ever heard, the variation in styles, the great talents, such wonderful and interesting approch that ALL players displayed is, well,------> beyond belief.
This is one CD that can be listened to over and over and never gotten tired of. WOW! Yes Roger, you have done the world a true favor, this CD will be appreciated by anyone, player or not. Musician or not.
I just have to know though, who is this "Fugitive , never mind,
Thank you Roger, you have created a monster!
Bobbe Seymour,

(song #3) and what?

Just got my copy of Legends of the Incredible Lap Steel Guitar yesterday, and -- WOW! Great CD! Congrats to Roger to getting it together, and to everyone who contributed to the project. It's been on my CD player since 3:00pm yesterday afternoon!

And, since I (along with most others here) can't seem to get enough of all things lap-steel, my question for Roger Smith is: is there a LILSG Vol.2 in the works???

Very, very good and a "must have" in your collection.

I listened to my copy for the first time this morning while going to work ... and almost kept driving down Interstate 5 so I could hear it all.

Fortunately, I have a CD player in my office and I think I'm going keep it on all day. ("Shari, cancel all my meetings.")

Kudos to everyone involved in making it --

Todd and Russ,
Thank you for the great feedback...it's really gratifying on this end, however the talented musicians are what make the CD what it is. The majority of credit belongs to them.
Regarding Vol. II: I'd be thrilled to put one together, but I think I have some work to do on this one yet.
Thanks to all of you who purchased the CD. Believe me, it's greatly appreciated.

I "second the motion" with Bobbe Seymour, Roger Smith did a great job putting this one all together. It's a pleasure to hear so many different styles on one CD, hope there can be a "Volume II and III" so we can get to check out the many other players out there.

Hi Jeff-
Actually that's a question that should be directed to Bobby since he is the one who picks the CD's.
Thank You

Thanks again Roger, great album. Is there anyone who does not recognize the fugitive steeler? Maybe Bobbe Seymour could give you a hint.

I'm listening to this now, and it's a great collection! Nice breadth of sounds and styles.

I have to ask if Mr. Bobbe Seymour would be willing to share the lap tuning used on his version of "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight"? Very full and lush sounding, like it's more than just C6th, I'm really curious.

Andrew, I'm very flattered that you ask, it was just a standard C6th (10 stg.) tuning on a Eddie Alkire guitar built by Epiphone in the 50's. GECAGECADC.(first to last) I love non-pedal steel so much after all these years. I wish I never had to play pedals again, but I do have to eat to stay alive. This CD proves that pedals aren't necessary to make great music, everyone one on this CD proved it too!
I love this CD more than I care to express, Roger Smith is my hero !
As is everyone that played on this masterpiece----(except me).

And who could blame you? We've been enjoying it too!

Every time I hear "Mardi March" I think "Dr. John meets Uncle Josh ..."
