My brother bought a Oahu steel guitar and thinks it's fairly old. Any ideas on how old and its value? He says its longer scale than most lap steels. It still has an old cloth type electric guitar chord with it in case. Thanks for any info. As soon as I see it I'll get the serial numbers offf it. Thanks and GOD bless! Terry: if you can give a more detailed description once you see the guitar, someone will be able to tell you the model and approximate value. By your description of a longer than normal scale length, it's almost certainly a Kay-made instrument from the late '30s to early '50s. Oahus generally are not highly valuable, but are very good players, and most, especially the fancier Diana models, are also very attractive.[This message was edited by Ian McLatchie on 09 February 2003 at 01:10 PM.] |

Terry:Check the serial number against the list in a prevous thread. If it was made by Valco, you should be able to determine the age. |

Hi- I'd also like some help with dating info on an Oahu electric lap. I believe it's the model below the 'Diana'. Full scale, Oahu Publishing decal on headstock, gold floral decals on mahogany body, old AM radio knobs (brown)(their on actual 55 - 150 station selection indicators),horshoe pickup-(killer sound), pat# 971042929135, big control plate on back. I bought the guitar with the original plush lined case and the original amp (Oahu in wood script across the 'radio' face (both amp and case are 'tweedish'). The plug on the speaker cord has small fuses (?)in it. Thanks Roger Smith |

Terry: That serial number is from 1956. I don't know how many different models Oahu offered at the time, but I would guess it is probably a MOTS (pearloid) guitar. They're not particularly valuable, although the string-through pickups are popular. I sold a 1953 white MOTS Oahu (w/ a tweed case, both in excellent condition) on eBay a few months ago for $305, although I see a lot more of them going for between $150 and $200.You can see an example of what I think it might be on eBay right now. (Despite the description, that guitar was manufactured in 1950, not the "1930s.") Then again, maybe your brother lucked out and found something like this Oahu ... Terry, without a picture or better description, it's impossible to give you more. Can you post a picture? Can you send me a picture and I'll post it?
