I don't think you'll need Jody for this one but I'm sure he'll add some great stuff. First of all, they are totally different, no parts interchange. The Custom has three legs, the strings run through the coil in the pickup, all string legnths are 22.5".One two and three necks (and one four neck)were manufactured from 1949 to 1954. Blonde and Dark wood finishes. The stringmaster has four legs, two pickups per neck, and a choice of three string legnths, 22.5 ,24.5 and 26" long. These were manufactured from 1953 until 1973. Blond, Dark wood and the last ones were black. This is an over simpflication but covers the basics. I have all models for sale at this time. Prices vary from $400.00 up depending on condition. Things to watch out for are striped out tuning keys, shorted out pickups and general poor cosmetic condition along with non-original cases. Is this too much information? We sell about 35-40 per year. We love them all. Check out the non-pedal portion of my web-page to see the differences in these two models of guitars. www.steelguitar.net Bobbe [This message was edited by BobbeSeymour on 10 March 2003 at 08:37 AM.] |

What is really interesting is that the Non-pedal Fender steels are worth MUCH more money than the California Fender pedal guitars. I like that! Bobbe |

Bobbe That Dual Pro was intended for me, Leo and Don spoke about naming a model after me.They decided on "cracked and flakey". I see Don & Leo got to you. Those guitars are priced below what I see in general, look at E bay and see the going prices, and add to that "buyer beware". Thanks for the plug,I needed that. Cracked and Flakey One has to be cracked and flakey to be a Forum member. I had a head start. |

Bobbe,In YOUR opinion, which has the better sound, the "custom" or the "stringmaster". I realize sound is 100% subjective, but I simply want YOUR opinion please, God bless you friend, carl |

I like them both but the Stringmaster does not have the trapizoid pickups.[This message was edited by Andy Alford on 10 March 2003 at 02:02 PM.] |

No problem with this answer, When I was a kid, I really liked the Custom tone much better, they were incredible for what they were, Chalker sounded better on his Custom (Duel Professional) than anyone had a right to sound. But the advantage of the Stringmaster is many fold. Much easier to replace tuning keys, much easier to rewind pickups, or even to totally replace them, easier to get parts for, narrower body which translates into easier to switch necks faster but most of all, the Stringmaster offers full access to playing the full string legnth, you know, no pickup covers to get in the way of playing the guitar. I have both models and I'm playing a non-pedal dance job tomorrow night, to be honest, I don't know which one I'll take. Probably the Custom, It's closer to the car. Non-pedal steel guitar has put the fun and challenge back into playing for me. Yes, I truly love it. I'm very glad to see so many fellow non-pedalers on this forum, the world just doesn't know what it's missing. Friend of this forum and everyone of you guys: Bobbe Seymour |

By the way, if you don't have your copy of "Ledgends of the Lap Steel" CD yet, you are missing some very good players, this CD is a classic that is sure to be loved forever, by generations not yet born. You can get it right here on this forum. Who said that? I did, just then, didn't you just see me write it? (happy face here) |

Personally, the warm tone is to be found on the Custom...I think Jody will agree on that as he owns both models. I like the Stringmaster, but given my druthers, I'll stay with the Custom, even with only 3 legs. (But that has been discussed a hundred times on the Forum!) |

A friend begged me to sell to him one of my steel guitars. I found it a lot easier to let the Stringmaster go.I could never let the Dual 8 Professional go. BTW, I like the three leg set-up. Have you ever noticed that it always sits steady when you move it. You never have to adjust a fourth leg;__three legs are always in the same plane. Much as I love the sound of the Stringmaster, for me, nothing beats the sound of the Custom and Leo's Direct String Pickups. I like a warm, round sound and rarely play toward the bridge so I never found the pickups getting in my way. |

Bobbe I need a car. Drive one up and bring Smiley with you. I'll give you my dogs in exchange. They are small dogs but they have telescoping legs and they can be adjusted from Lhasa Apso's into Great Dane's by a simple adjustment. They are low mileage, most of the mileage is on me. |
