Topic: Fix or rewind a broken Magnatone pickup? How?

I'm just curious. If the pickup in a Magnatone is embedded under the MOT, how does one fix or rewind the electronics without completely destroying the cosmetics? ------------------

The only way I could think of is to use a razor blade and cut a 3 sided cut a little beyound the pickup cavity so you can have some of the body to glue it back down on when your done messing around with the pickup, the pickup cover will cover up the work. You can get Jason Lolar's pickup winding book and go down that road or just stick something else in there. The primo modification would be a Ricky horseshoe. I don't think I have seen any one do that yet?  |

Gerald,I believe I would consult with Jason Lollar or Lindy Fralin. I'll bet one of them have done surgery on a MOTS Magnatone or at least have the pickup measurements. You can locate the pickup latteral centerline and latteral extent with a magnetic compass (even a toy one). Just in case you are not aware of it: If you're gonna do the cosmetic surgery, The Guitar Player Repair Guide, by Dan Erlwine, published by Guitar Player magazine ... has some excellent tips on repairing all sorts of guitar materials including plastic. He has some great tips about using super glue as a repair finish to fill-in blems and seams. The book is a large paperback and is available at most better guitar stores or online at most of the major guitar outlets. Aloha,

Don, yes, anything will fit a Magnatone if'n you just a start gnawing on the pickup cavity to make it fit the Ricky pickups dimensions. Now's if'n you be a wearing dentures, I's a just might suggest you be better off a using a router. |

Don, I've seen pedal steel stores in Tenn. that sell fret boards, surf a little. That's great your fixing it up for your grandson. Good luck! |

I have one of these old Mag's that had a bad pickup. I could tell by irregularities in the MOT where the old pickup was positioned. I slit open the oblong area. I choose a Lawrence L250 blade type replacement, (I think #08671 in Stewart-MacDonald catalog, $4?.). It had height adjustment built in & fit in the old cavity without any other work, as I remember, but it has been a few years ago. The blade had an arched top which I carefully filed down level & straight. It sounds awesome -- full range & hot!! And with original chrome bonnet in place, it's looks as it did before.

Don, you are correct. It is #0871. Thank you for catching that. (I was just testing to make sure we're awake out there  )
