The recent post on the Leavitt tuning had me trying it out again. It's an incredible tuning, but I still find myself going back to the C6. Maybe it's just for plain old comfort. Maybe I'm lazy. But straight C6 is an undeniably great, flexible tuning for six string.Anyway, there have been many posts on quick and easy alterations of dobro open G and D tunings, but I haven't seen any posts like this for C6. I'm sure they're out there, though, so I thought I'd ask what folks here have tried. Here's a couple variations I've had luck with without changing my usual C6 string gauges. All are spelled low to high.
CEGBDE
These intervals are the same as what many use on the bottom of a C6 8-string tuning (with an F on the bottom). I really like this one, and you only need to retune two strings. Not so many extended chords like the Leavitt, but straight bar gives two different major triads (without moving the bar), a minor, a major 7, a minor 7, a 6th on top, and some nice sounding dominant 7 fragments. Plus an easy string pull behind the bar on the top string to make a full dominant 7.
CEGACF
Yields some similar chords to the above but with different inversions, plus a churchy sounding sus4. Nice 7th on the forward slant on the top 3 strings.
CEGAC#G
A "reverse" Jerry Byrd with the high C raised instead of the low. Really the same chord options as the regular JB, but it keeps the strings grouped in two pairs of 1,3,5. A forward slant makes a major chord across all six strings.
BbEGACE
An abbreviated Jr. Brown? I don't care for this one on the 6, it works much better on the 8.
I left out traditional JB C6/A7 and the Leavitt, but those sure do work well also without buying new strings.
Other ideas for simple but interesting C6 retunings?
