I have heard Jeremy Wakefield playing with Wayne Hancock, he also did a great album with guitarist Dave Biller ("The Hot Guitars Of Biller And Wakefield). What a great player!

Does anybody have anymore details about him?

Thanks, Walter

Walter, JW is a friend of mine, though I haven't seen him in two years now ( for obvious reasons ). You're right he's a terrific player and probably the closest thing to Joaquin Murphy you will ever see! He also plays with the Lucky Stars ( see the Sponge Bob thread ) and they have two vinyl 45's and a cd out. Get them, you won't be disappointed, western swing/hillbilly doesn't get any better than that. JW also plays steel on all Deke Dickerson's albums, though only on some tracks, since Deke always features various styles of music on his albums. Then there's Dave Stuckey's album "Get a Load Of This", another western swing masterpiece, JW on all tracks and also the incredible twin guitars of Dave Biller and Whit Smith. Also another great album is the Smith's Ranch Boys' More Barnyard Favorites. The Speedy/Jimmy-style interplay between JW and TK Smith will knock your socks off. Do a search with those names and get the records, money well spent.
And oh yeah, JW plays a triple neck Bigsby mostly.
And BTW, The Lucky Stars and Deke Dickerson will play in Spain in July on the Screamin' Festival in Callela, near Barcelona. Most likely they wil tour other parts of Europe too, stay tuned.

Jussi,

Thanks for the info! Is there any way to find out more about the upcoming European Tour (a website?).

Thanks, Walter

Jussi, is JW using the same tunings as Murphy? Do you remember what tuning he favors for lead and also for fills? What kind of thoery stuff did he talk about as far as his way of looking at his approaches, (slanting or no slanting)? Thanks...

Walter, check www.theluckystars.com for info! I don't know if there's any dates yet, but you can try and email them.
Jesse, like I said it's been over two years since I talked with him last, and we actually never really talked too much about the theory stuff. As far as I know, he uses C6 with the Bb on the bottom and E13. Exactly what E13, I don't know. The Bigsby he has is a pedal steel and he's done some E9 on recordings, I believe it's the original Isaacs version of E9. Sorry I can't be more of help, I too would like to pick the guy's brain a bit more, but we just don't see each other too often. I am seriously thinking about going to Spain though, it's a heck of a festival; five days of good music, beer and pretty girls under the Mediterranian sun

I went to a friend's gig in Chicago one night. On the bill after them was Dave Stuckey. Little did I know, Biller and Wakefield were in his band. What a treat!

Soon to be released on Ecco-Fonic/Major Label: Jeremy "J.W" Wakefield CD entitled "Steel Guitar Serenade". This is according to a banner ad in the latest Hepcat record catalog.

Yes, I've heard about that too, EccoFonic/Major is (are) Deke Dickerson's own label(s) and I'm pretty sure this one will be out as a vinyl too IMO, one of the most interesting releases coming out.

Once it is released, you should definitely post it on the forum, it should be a winner!

I met JW at a Wayne Hancock gig in Sheffield, England. We chatted for a while about Joacin Murphy. And I then spent most of the evening sat right in front of him playing a D8 Rickenbacker. I only play Dobro -- seeing JW fly around a D8 was mind bending. A nice guy indeed.

Incidentally - At the end of the gig a middle aged woman came and asked me what the guy at the front of the stage was doing all evening. She had never seen a steel guitar before and thought that maybe he had been fixing some piece of equipment for the band.
:-) bless her
Cheers,
Bill
