Judging from the soundfiles on their website they're an exciting band for sure!
(And now I need to order one of their CD's...)

Looks like a fun show, I love Rodeo Bar.
Saw Ingrid Lucia of the Flying Neutrinos last time I was in the B. Apple.

But I missed meeting you Howard.
One of only four New Yawka's who actually leave the island occasionally.

David.....I have regards for you (no,not in that way)

from Sheri Wagner. She was also at the Rodeo Bar enjoying The Moonlighters. Sheri is a fine blues and swing vocalist/guitarist who has also had Jeff Lampert join her on gigs. Sheri was quite impressed with the music and the virtuosity of the band.

We also spoke about you David.....but this is a family forum...

Wow Mike! What a fantastic group!
Getting the cd or cd's for sure. If ever the group finds the ops to venture to sunny ca for a tour, be sure to let us all know!

Great music!

I think I should mention that Henry Bogdan is the steel player on the band's recording up 'til now. He was a founder of the group after playing with the heavy metal band Helmet. http://www.misanthrope.com/moonlighters/

BTW, thanks, Rick.

Mike, it was good to see you again also. Actually, Mike and I have little in common. He plays Hapa Haoli style, and I play Hapa Haz'zard style.

My apologies to Jon Light. I'm sorry that I did not get my "Hank on" this past Sunday evening. Although those Hank dogs & Hank burgers were calling me, so was "Bali Hi".....

Hey Mike--it will be a pleasure when I finally find my way to one of your performances.

Howard--last night was a rare stay at home Sunday night for me. Kershaw was out of town and I declined participation in a ragged bluegrass night.

OK Rick, done. Had to show that Fry Pan. The Gibson L-4 being played by Carla in the Moonlighters' pic was mine, but I sold it to her after her Martin OO-17 met an untimely end.
I'm happy to say that at this point in time I've got every guitar I could want. Well...nah, I'm going to stand by that statement.
I'm gonna have to hire myself a website designer or something, cause my skills are just sad.

I downloaded the MP3 of "Hawaiian Blues"...

I'll hold my tongue long enough on the
"war chant" grunts to say that this music is magic to my ears!

NO ONE has nailed this sort of sound for decades! It's so "authentic" the only thing that's missing is the 78 rpm hiss and scratch! I love it!

Mike, would you mind posting some facts about how the music was recorded? How'd you get such a natural sound out of the instruments?

NOTHING out of Hawai'i in the past quarter century can even come close to what you've done here! I'm giddy!

Thanks for the kind words. Although I'm not the original steel player on the recording (Henry Bogdan is), I can shed a little light on how it was recorded. It was recorded in a small Brooklyn apartment with an SM57 into a Roland VS-880 (by the bassist). It sounds like a little compression was used. I know the final mix was done in a good studio called Water Music.
That's basically it. I think it is a good record through and through. Thge original songs are wonderful and I really enjoy playing guitar on them in the Merle Travis style. I am really looking forward to future recordings.

I would say my style of playing is similar to Henry's, although I have a penchant for the Andy Iona-style vibrato and I also like the King Bennie hot jazz improvisations.

I will be in Honolulu in a few weeks--I'd like to come hear you play. Shoot me an email and let me know where to find you

One more little taste--

Twilight In Flight from Hello Heartstring.
This is an original written by Bliss Blood and The Moonlighters, and it's one of my favorites.

Those war chants are hot. And the rest of it, of course.

Henry sent me Dreamland when it first came out and I loved it but this stuff is even better! Wonderful, swinging music, Mike. Muted trumpet and steel go together like peanut butter and fluff.

Mike, what are the dates in May that The Moonlighters will be playing in NY/Brooklyn.

It's not clear (to me) from the website. I know you're off to Hawai'i soon.

I'll be in Hawaii from 5/11-5/20, so I'll miss the Waikiki Wally's date. Please note that we'll be at Barbes (Park Slope) on 5/29.

Any good recommendations for Hawaii, anyone? Who's playing where? I'm in Kauai from 5/11-5/15 and Honolulu the rest of the way.

Hi Mike,

Have fun in Hawaii. The HSGA website has a listing of who is playing where and when in Hawaii.

As you know, musical gigs have a way of disapearing into thin air at a moments notice, so call ahead before venturing out to hear some live steel.

Who's playing where in Hawaii
