I have an opportunity to buy this a 1936 tiger stripe maple Gibson Lap Steel. It has gold plated plate and headstock and is original except for 2 replacement tuners. It has the original tweed case but both hinges are broken. Can anyone help with the value of this guitar/ Pictures available by e-mail....IP

Ivan, it seems to be a EH185 in original condition
on ebay they go from 700$ to 900$
perhaps someone else would like to jump on in and help along

Chuck and Crowbear, thanks for your e-mails. Like I thought the seller wants far too much. It is in nice order and everything works but not worth the $2500NZ ($1500US) he is asking.

IMO, an EH 185, in ex+ codition would command at least $1200.00.

I've seen very few of these on ebay unless I've missed them from time to time.

Tiger maple and gold plating sounds like a custom made guitar to me.

Howard is right - EH185 aren't that current on bay compared to EH100/150/125
perhaps it's justified but i find 1500$ to be a bit Xpensive

Crowbear.
That birdseye Gibson is a beauty! I just got
a Pre war Rick B6 and have a EH 125 Gibson but what a great looking lap that is. Can't
play in that price range unless I sell something.

The EH275 is basically an upgraded version of the 1940 EH185. With only 25 produced it is a very rare bird indeed. This is only the second one I've laid eyes on. Gibson also produced a EH185N (natural) and it appears very similar but has the Charlie Christian pickup instead of the ES-300. I'm fortunate enough to already own 1 of the 25 (came from the Akira Tsumura collection and is pictured in his book) but there is always room for another ! Truly a stunning steel and although the Charlie Christian purists may disagree, the ES-300 sounds great especially through an EH-185 amp. They also made a companion EH-275 amp but they seem even more scarce than the steel. As I recall, the last EH185 sold on eBay for around $900 and it was missing its original knobs. The EH275 will certainly bring out the Gibson collectors towards the end-of-auction. Kinda tough to benchmark a price since few have ever made it to the general market. This is the first one I've seen on eBay. Should be interesting......

Thanks for reminding me about this thread Crowbear.

According to Gruhn's guide, and as stated, only 25 of these EH 275's were produced/shipped. Rare birds indeed. This is the second one that I've seen on ebay in 6 years. The third one was for sale at Gruhn's about 4 years ago for $2500.00. It was a 6 string with a CH pick up, in beautiful condition. Mine is a 7 string that I won on ebay. It has the Charlie Christian pick up. I also have an EH 185 with an ES 300 pick up, and I do agree with Tighe. The EH 300 is a bit hotter.

All times are Pacific (US)
