Please Help!!!!!

My group wants to do the Hawaiian War Chant in a few weeks, and I can't find any tab for this song. I can chord the main theme, but some ideas of single string work, melody picking, and licks have me for a loop.

Any ideas where I can find some tab ideas on paper in learning this song?

Not only do I not have tab, but they want to do it really fast....I'm starting to sweat bullets...

By the way, Earnest, there actually is an Island of Lulu off the coast of British Columbia.

And yes, spelled backwards it is also ul-ul.

The surf group the Halibuts did it as Hawaiian for the verse and twangy, minor key surf style for the bridge.

I have the sheet music, from an old Johnny Noble songbook. I could e-mail that to you, but it's not the tab you're seeking.

I have versions by Andy Iona, Dick McIntire, and Bob Brozman (the one that's filled with the most single string work). Send me an e-mail if you'd like the sheet music or have a Q about any of the versions.

Mr. Bovine.........nice to discover someone else listened to the old black and white radio shows that I did as a kid: The Breakfast Club.........was it not?

I find the Verse or chorus or whatever that is peformed throughout in the MINOR KEY to be lots of fun. It sounds "Sooooooooo" different. Should prove to be a challenge for just about anyone. Not impossible, just different.

Baz, yours is one of my favorite versions...it's fun! Ironic that Frank also dedicated to another Jeff (or Geoff) many moons ago. But I could never play it with your touch and finesse.

I also like a version by Lani McIntire on the "Hawaiian Moonlight" album.

The Bob Brozman version sounds interesting with the single string work. I wonder if Bob ever had that tabbed out? I was hoping our group leader would have an audio track with vocals that I could just chord along to, but she wants an instrumental so I've got to get pickin'!

If I go crazy trying to learn this, I'll end up on the island of LuLu with ol' Spike...along with the cockeyed mayor and plenty of crosseyed hula girls...

That sure brings back memories of the late 30's. I used to play a lot of hawaiian tunes on A6 or C#minor or E7 6string tunings on my Supro.
Yes, we played hawaiian War chant both in major and minor keys. Had to do it every night. Everybody liked it.Ah memories of the days when we played all kinds of music....al

To those of you refering to playing a minor section....The minor section I was refering to is not just the usual melody played in a minor key, but a completely different melody...and lyrics... the version I posted a link to is Instrumental until this section which is vocal (by me.)

Yep.....

Bill has it. I haven't gotten this one from him but my gues is that it will be much closer to "what's it's suposed to be" than the ultra comtemporary version in link given in the first post.

A question for Basil Henriques...

I'd like to try to figure out some of your licks on that great version of 'Hawaiian War Chant'. Just so I'm on the right track (and so I can figure out the rest of your songs), what tuning do you usually use?

(By the way, I downloaded that song onto my MiniDisc and played it on my radio show last week on CJSR here in Edmonton [www.cjsr.com]. You'll be happy to know that I've been regularly tricking the station's indie-rock fan base into listening to Hawaiian steel in the middle of the workday.)

Hi Dwayne... thanks for the spin...I hope Jeff doesn't mind me "Hi-Jacking" his post .. just for a comment..

Well Dwayne you ask about my usual tuning.. it depends on the type of chord structure of the song ... in this instance , E6 and C6 would be my tunings
Thanks for the interest... I'll post you a link to ALL of my albums in mp3 format (For download for the type of use that you put them too) phew!!
Regards.
