In the space once filled by the great old 'Swing Club' on Hotel St. is Kaspy's, a new dig for lovers of live/classic 50s era Hawaiian music. Located just 2 doors down (Ewa) from Club Hubba Hubba (and good luck finding parking).

Fri. & Sat. nites are the main showcase evening's, starting at 8pm Fri., & 9pm Sat. til midnite.

The best part is, Jeff Au Hoy has been regularly sitting in on steel with the ladies group 'Na Wahine Eha' on Fri.'s, lending the ultimate touch of authenticity to sounds rarely heard in this neighborhood for decades.

Slowly Chinatown is reclaiming the area from the riff raff and returning to it's glory day's, and this is another welcome step.

Help support good Hawaiian music.

Kaspy's. Be there!

Why did they wait until I left town?

What about that country night spot called NASHVILLE WEST or something like that? It was just around the corner to the north and east, on the northside, from where Sally and I were staying. It was downstairs from the sidewalk area. Passed it every day on our walk from the hotel to Denny's.

Probably passed it with your guitar in hand too, didn't you?!

Yeah, Kaspy's would have been perfect for you, Ray. Too bad they waited til your ship sailed to bust out. Hopefully, next time you come, the area will be like it was in the good old day's and you can go from bar to bar and hear/play steel everywhere.

Ray, I still feel apologetic about that ridiculous day we had at the shopping center with all that unnecessary walking. With that sun bearing down, the mall started looking more and more like a huge sand dune... the theme from Lawrence of Arabia started playing in my head... and I think I saw a mirage of a lemonade pitcher off in the distance.

What a guy! That Jeff Au Hoy..... I've never met anyone quite like him. Here, he's appologizing to me about the long walk on a hot, humid, no breeze kind of a day in a busy shopping mall, but what he DIDN'T TELL you all, is: Jeff was struggling with a full sized, dog-house, accoustic bass, numerous electrical cords and at least one amplifier. Never a complaint or a plea for help. What a guy! I want you all to remember that name. Not only a really nice and sincere kinda young man, but one very fine steel guitarist as well. Go see him while he's here in Joliet at the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association convention.

This is great news for Hawaiian music. Hopefully, it will be on the authentic side since it's not in a hotel. Jeff, more power to you. Have you made any CDs?

You got that right, Dan, this is some of the best news in a long time. The place got a decent write up in the current 'Honolulu Weekly', and with what I saw and heard last night from these 3 ladies and Jeff on steel, it's the best show in town. You could not ask for it to be more authentic, probably even more so than Aunty Genoa's group which is as real as it gets. This is the kind of Hawaiian music you will find only at private party/back yard jams these days. But here at Kaspy's, 3 seasoned Wahine (uke/vocals, standard/vocals, and wash tub bass!) keep the good times rollin' with the great 40/50/60s local style toons. Add to that, a natural on the steel, and you just can't beat it(you guy's at Joliet are so fortunate to have Jeff coming in less than a week!).

Come to Kaspy's on a Friday night, and you'll witness what it was like in the good old day's, cause they're still happening.

Hopefully they will still be in biz in April. Sounds like a great place to jam Hawaiian. Thanx Ron.

Wow -- that sounds REALLY cool! My band has recently put together a side project doing the old Hawaiian music of yesteryear, mixed in with some Caribbean/Latin flavors, and all done with ukulele, steel, bass, and it's really a lot of fun. I would really love to be in Joliet next week, but alas, have gigs all weekend long. I especially want to hear Jeff's playing on some of this great music.

Can't wait to get to the islands and check it out!

I see that aloha airlines has very low fares to Hawaii now for $143.00. I am very tempted to fly out to ohua with my magnatone and a tent so I can jam with some of the locals. It's great there is a new club for this type of music, I hope it spreads around the islands.

Jesse, a Maggie and a tent might get you pretty far these days. Now's the perfect time to hit Honolulu, as most of the steel competition is in Joliette for a few more (wish I wuz...). We need all the steel we can get, so hurry over!

Bob, I believe that Lopaka has passed on, quite a while back.
