I took an extra day after a business trip this week. Just spent the day guitar looking in Tokyo. Man are we ever spoiled in the US. The street value of the Fender Japan steels is still higher than the cost here of a nice old vintage one. And check out the $1000 price tag on the old National. I did see one semi-deal after all day looking: an old 1-pickup Supro spanish electric for $200. For reference, the Yen is about 100:1 right now, so just knock off two zeros to convert. The other steels in the picture are a Guyatone at the bottom, a Canopus on the right and a Rickenbacker on the far right. This is in the suburb of Ochanomizu, where all the guitar stores are located. I went to about 25-50 I think. And there were a couple of nice old Fender trap customs for about $3-$4000. And a Gibson Console D8 for about $5000. Anyway, thought you all might get a kick out of these photos: pic1...pic2... The Fenders are priced at $1440 and $1280. The Canopus is a more reasonable $1200 and the Rickenbacker 6 is $680. The Guyatone 6 is $800. I guess those are considered a vintage guitar over there. Sorry about how hard it is to read the prices. I compressed the photos pretty far.

Gene - that web page is waaay cool! Thanks for posting that. Yes, Bob. The price tag was 80,000 Yen, which is roughly $800 US$. Crazy, huh? That was why I put up this thread because we have got it better than we know.

Cool pics! I'm just impressed to see several steel guitars for sale in a store, since most music stores don't carry them. Here's a pic of a Guyatone I used to have. I thought it had a nice tone (23" scale). Some people don't hold Guyatones in high regard, but I miss mine. It's one of those things I sold that I wish I hadn't of. This one was made in the 1950s I believe. The sleek black and white color design was cool, too. |

No, Greg, I wanted to, but just didn't have that kind of time. I own an Excel D10 pedal, too. I'll be back there from time to time, so maybe in the future I'll get the chance. I'm not real sharp at navigating the subway system in Tokyo yet, so I am pretty careful not to get lost. It would help if I knew the language... Howard, good one. I didn't have enough yen for those particular fenders for sure.[This message was edited by Paul Arntson on 13 December 2004 at 07:10 PM.] |

Paul,If you are in Tokyo and enjoy the non pedal guitar you may wish to look up "Lion" Kobayashi and Noguchi Takeyoshi. Both these gentlemen are very fine musicians and sure to provide a thoroughly entertaining night so well worth the effort to seek out. Good luck with the nihongo! Jimmy |

i don't know if you've noticed but there are frequent japanese bidders over on ebay bidding on lap steels & consoles. particularly Fenders they, like us Europeans are probably responsible for the rising prices like the Zen master says: One Arrow - One Life |
