Has anyone seen the Derrick Campbell Sacred Steel DVD? I have seen it advertised, and I may want to get it. It seems to me that the sacred steel tuning would be worth learning. Do any of you find this tuning especially difficult? I am somewhat of a beginner, so should I go down this road? Thanks in advance for you time and replies.

I have the CD and I highly recommend it. His style is very expressive. In my opinion, it doesn't hurt to experiment with different tunings, but you will probably benefit by finding one you like and sticking with it. You can always transpose most songs to the tuning of your choice.

Curt,

There is no "sacred steel tuning" per se. Darick uses (usually) E6, which is somewhat of an anomaly among sacred steelers. The most common tuning among them for 6 strings is "Dobro tuning" 1-3-5-1-3-5 (low to high). Many 8 or 10 string sacred steelerss use E major tuning, some add a seventh. Some have unison strings (always the root or tonic) in the mid or lower register.

Most of the sacred steel players can quickly adapt to another player's tuning--something I'm not so good at. Remember too, a whole lot of their playing is single-note lines. The way Darick sounds it would be hard to guess his tuning is E6 just by listening. You don't hear the 6th chord "coloring."

I think many steel players could learn something from Darick's approach. He's a master at what he does and it's not quite like any other genre of steel guitar.

By the way, I had no role in the production of the video (or Chuck's) and haven't watched it. In my experience, all of Homespun's products are very well done.

Life is short. Go for it.

If this is the style you want to learn, then I'd recommend this DVD. Derrick plays a few songs slowly so you can clearly see his technique. He really knows how to manipulate the volume and tone controls on his Sierra lap steel guitar to make it sound like a good vocalist.
As with all Homespun Tapes products I've owned, the photography is excellent. There are times when I wish they had photographed more of Mr. Campbell's left hand, but I believe the focus on his right hand techniques is appropriate.

Ummm...so what exactly is his tuning...."dobro" G or E6?
I saw him last Friday night and didn't get a chance to ask him, but the sound guy said it was E13.
Whatever it is, he plays it INCREDIBLELY!

Darick's tuning is B-E-B-E-G#-B-C#-E. I use it for my 8 string lap and it's my permanent tuning.

Now here's a twist-when I saw the Campbell Brothers a few weeks ago in San Francisco, Darick told me that he was using a different tuning than what he showed on the DVD. It was standard guitar tuning plus the 2 extra strings-I don't recall what they were-I e-mailed him but haven't heard back. I thought that was odd to use an extended form of standard tuning, but I didn't want to bug the guy too much while he was signing cd's. He let me sit down behind his new Sierra (with DiMarzio instead of GeorgeL pickups) and insisted I check it out. A sweet guitar! Thank goodness the amp was very low-I felt pretty weird up there.

What a nice guy and a real gentleman, as they all were.

I heard him play in New Orleans this past spring. The guy is just so good. He was tuned to E7 with a C# on top

I saw the Campbell Brothers recently and Darick had some new wacky tuning on there that I don't know what it was. He still has the two low E strings on the bottom, though, one of which is really, really low (it's the thickest string I've ever seen on a lap steel).

To get the tuning I showed above, I use a .068 on the bottom end- barely fits in the tuner post.

Darrick plays a different tuning every time I play with him. I forgot to ask him this time around, but a year ago it was the following (low to high):

B-E-B-E-G-B-C#-E

I kid you not. THe wierd thing was that he said he got if from me.
