I work in a music store (Corson's Guitar Store in Urbana Illinois) and a customer brought in a square neck guitar to get it worked on. It looks like a regular small bodied acoustic guitar but it has a square neck (round hole, no resonator). It says "Mckinney" on the headstock, but there is no other info to be found on or in the guitar. I assume that these were considered accoustic lap steels and were used for Hawaiian music in they're hayday. Has anyone seen this brand before and could someone tell me what it might be worth? It's a well built instrument in pretty good shape. I tuned it to a dobro tuning but I would bet that these types of guitars were tuned to the popular lap steel tunings of the day. Did any of the famous lap steel players of yesterday ever record with an instrument like this? I have seen similar guitars before, but seeing this one has gotten' me interested in the history of these instruments.Any info about acoustic squarenecks would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen a few McKinneys (electric and acoustic lap steel--sold one of the latter for a frield on eBay) and they seem to be a less-prolific variation on Oahu or Bronson (no Rickenbacker-bakelite McKinneys to my knowledge, however)--probably made by the same factory(ies). I'd guess they were a department/chain store or mail-order outfit. Kind of a cheap stencil number?
