I am about to strip down and re-paint an old National Grand Console D-8. The tuners have been replaced with some more modern ones which are 'functional' but spoil the vintage appearance of the instrument. The guitar came with the original tuner cover plates and I would like to find some replacement hardware a bit closer to the orginal that might fit inside the cover plates. Does anyone know the standard colour options available on this instrument? Mine is serial # V29551. There is an interesting current post about paint and I was thinking of taking this to an autobody shop....I assume a body shop might be the best place to get very smooth and relatively cheap coatings. Are there any problems with using acrylic autobody enamels on old wooden guitars? The legs are another story - pipe flanges have been routed into the bottom of the guitar so I may just leave those and try to find some replacement chrome legs with 5/8" pipe thread. All suggestions are welcome - I am not hung up on authenticity of this restoration. I do however appreciate the original aesthetic and above all like the sound of this guitar. |

You should talk to Don Burrows about the legs. wingingit@adelphia.netHe can probably make a set with the proper threads. His work is very high quality. Don also make legs for Stringmasters, Dual-Pros and probably any other steel that needs legs. ------------------ JCFSGC,RMSGC,HSGA member Boyett's Glass Bars |

Colors? Mine has white necks and the rest is black, including the plastic covers. The covers should give you a clue as to the original colors of your speciman. Billy |

Mine is brown necks with tan trim. Those are the only colors I have seen that I remember. |

Thanks for the tips gentlemen. My guitar has been sprayed a lurid metallic green and the covers are copper-coloured. I am thinking the instrument may look nice in a Fender blonde colour or black. They appear to have had only two basic colour schemes originally as described - black one and a tan one. I will contact the legs suggestion - any tips on tuning hardware? |
