Topic: What Bullet Bar Was "Standard"?

Nowadays the standard choice seems to be the Dunlop Jerry Byrd or the Broz-o-phonic. Or something along those lines. Some guys use Rajahs. For those of you who were around in the 1940's and 50's, what was the most popular bar for an 8-string non pedal steel? What make did most pros use? I didn't start playing until around 1962, in Los Angeles. The Black Rajah bakelite bar, with a slight taper, was very common.------------------

most of us in the fortys used the Oahu monel bar. It would not cover 8 strgs but how many times do we really have to. Most fellows that wanted a different bar usualy went to a machine shop and the guy would make you a bar of a drill rod. most were hollowed out due to the weight but some liked the extra heft. The black rajahs were very popular in the 50s. cc |

Back in the late forties, about all that was readily available were flat bars or bars by Nick Manoloff. I ended up at a machine shop and had two round bars made for me. They were not all that great. As I recall, the surfaces were rather rough. |

What is/was the Broz-o-phonic?
I have an old bronze bar from the 40's which I still use and is my favorite, although it shows lots of ware and dings on it. Still have a couple of them black plastic ones. Sure would like to get hold of a new bronze bar from someone. |

The Broz-o-phonic bar is a steel bar 2-3/4" x 3/4" endorsed by guitarist Bob BROZman. No bronze involved. |

I believe the Brozophonic is longer than 2 3/4", closer to 3". It is manufactured by a company called Latch Lake. |

Jeff, the small diameter bullet bar I gave you a couple of years ago is from 1947, when I bought it new. If I remember correctly, it has "sureform" stamped in the end. Don't know what the brand is.
