Working out of town this holiday season. I know I should be happy to be enployed, but...

Anyway, I'm sitting in a crappy hotel room and reading the December issue of Guitar Player and notice Steve Kimock player a Fender Lap (looks like a double neck 6) on page 117 and thought you all "needed" to know!

Where did he get that giant invisible volume pedal?

I'll admit that Steve was a motivating force behind my decision to take up lap steel this year at age 52, even though he's typically thought of as a "fretter". In that GP article, he says "steel guitar is very liberating, because it allows you to sing a melody in an unbroken stream of notes and get the intonation to sit better with your ear and your heart, as opposed to being stuck on the twelve-equal-divisions-of-the-octave grid of the guitar's fretboard."

That GP article is a continuation of several discussions he's had over the past year or so on the issue of just intonation, thirds & sevenths, tone, etc. He also has a pretty nice collection of Stringmasters (dual/triple/quad) and old Supros, and always brings a few on tour. He's also one of the players who had a chance to check out Rick's awesome NIBro's (and raved about 'em). But his favorite instrument, I believe, is his old Regal squareneck acoustic.

By all means check him out the next time he & his band come around (I get my next chance this Friday here in Portland!).

Steve and I grew up together in Bethlehem, Pa., even played in high school jam bands together.

When he later moved to California, he woked at Mesa with b0b. Small world!

Another school friend of Steve and me was Jesse Gress, who became Music Editor of GP Mag around 1990. We were all within a year of each other. I was the elder, and trying hard to keep up with these underclassmen .

The Lehigh Valley was a fertile music scene back then.

Don, Steve & band are at the Crystal Ballroom on Burnside this Friday evening. There's an opening act as well, so in all liklihood he won't hit the stage until around 10 or so.

It's generally an eclectic crowd, some tie-dye & dreadlocks, some old balding greybeards like myself. His music could be described as eclectic as well...think jazz improv meets bluegrass, blended with a dash of Hawaii, middle east modes and African rhythms, all instrumental.

He has an extensive presence on the Live Music Archive site. If anyone's interested in some samples, here are a couple of streaming files that give a taste of some of his steel work (hope the links work, my 1st attempt):

I'm glad that some of you are liking him! Like many here, he credits the Prince of Polyester (David Lindley) as his prime influence on steel.

If any of you would like a full show, or some other suggested tracks, feel free to contact me off-forum and I'll be happy to oblige. In the meantime, this workshop with guitarist Fareed Haque at the High Sierra Music Festival this past summer is pretty enjoyable too. I believe that he did the whole show on his Regal squareneck. You can stream the whole workshop, or select the individual 64Kbps MP3 files.

Enjoy,
Tom

One more post on this one, in order to bring it back to where Craig started. I just remembered that the GP article he mentioned is now available online here, so one doesn't have to search out the magazine on the rack.

I saw him last year in Santa Cruz. He had a Stringmaster that nite, sounded amazing, his drummer was so good the audience was dancing and they were playing in 9/8 ! See these guys, real free-form jazz-rock fusion.
