Jerry said he played (hi to lo) E, C, A, G, E, C, C# when he went to a seven string guitar so he didn't have to retune from C to C# on the low string. He implied that this was in the mid 40's so it wouln't of been until he went to an eight string guitar that the bass A string showed up on the bottom end.

However, many of his recordings from the early-mid fifties clearly have the bass A string, with the most obvious example being the B section of "Steelin' The Chimes" off his Steel Guitar Favorites record. In this instance the A7 tuning is strummed, which is an ugly sound when both C and C# are present. Besides, if he had both C and C#, he wouldn't of had room for the A string (which is most definitely heard). He would of needed an eight string guitar.

My question is, process of illimination tells me the seven string C6/A7 tuning from this time must be:

E
C
A
G
E
C#
A (bass note)

Is this correct?

Perhaps a .042w or .044w, but; not the .068w or .070w, until 8-strs.!

Howard White and Jerry got their Trot~Mor 7-str. guitars at the same time. Tuned: E–C–A–G–E–C#–(A=.042/.044 or less). Howard sold his Trot~Mor tuned that way just last year! [Right Ray?]
