Unfortunately when a book like this is out of print for so long, places like eBay are your only option. Scotty's Music sells the Jerry Byrd complete instruction course, and it's a lot more information for not much more money.------------------ Brad's Page of Steel A web site devoted to acoustic & electric lap steel guitars |

It's a Rickenbacker, I believe it's Model CW-6, made from 1957-61, wood body, grille cloth on front, 6 strings, 3 legs, renamed the JB (Jerry Byrd) model in 1961. |

The Jerry Byrd instruction course is fine. But I really think it's time for a more up to date approach. We really need a C6 course coupled with a CD and Video DVD. Jerry Byrd's book lacks the visuals and the video that he produced with the HSGA 15 years ago or so is not so great in terms of close ups and really explaining technique. Video-wise, it's very outdated technically. There's a market out there for this (small, but a market). The instructor who produces this product is guaranteed sales. ------------------ Gerald Ross 'Northwest Ann Arbor, Michigan's King Of The Hawaiian Steel Guitar' CEO, CIO, CFO - UkeTone Records Gerald's Fingerstyle Guitar Website Board of Directors Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association

Kev, (and Bev?) Scotty is the best source for this course, but be aware that JB will supervise you from above where he now teaches his style to all the greats up there.. And, I most definitely agree with Gerald and Rick about the need for an up-to-date DVD course etc.[This message was edited by basilh on 22 May 2006 at 01:36 AM.] |

My Jerry Byrd "Instruction Course for the Hawaiian "Steel" Guitar is dated 1954 and has Jerry on the cover holding a Richenbacher bakelite 7 string guitar. The book starts out in the original Hawaiian A major, high bass, tuning and ends up with "Steelin' The Blues" in C6th + 7th tuning. Priceless!

I've seen that early 1950's edition, and this 1960 one, and of course, the later one that Scotty sells. I've owned all three of them at one time or another. Jerry added material to each edition and omitted other material, but many of the sections in the last edition are identical to the 1950s version, and still bear the copyright date 1952.Jerry also had a 1955 song book called Favorites or something like that. About a dozen tunes tabbed out, red cover with a photo of Jerry holding a Rick.[This message was edited by Doug Beaumier on 22 May 2006 at 08:07 AM.] |

Thanks all, well yes thumbs up to a more up to date, C6th/A6th dvd course. All other guitar styles feature highly contemporary 'great' players like Kelly Joe Phelps etc, what I yearn for is something like the excellent Josh Graves instructional video, beatifull tunes, superbly played, normal and slow speed, surely someone out there can play 12th street rag properly cant they, I have tried a few dvds from various 'lap' outlets and frankly have not been impressed, out of tune, expressionless licks, the worst thing I ever heard in my life was a gospel bluegrass instructional CD from a reputable firm in southern states, it was absolutely appalling, I sent it back with a letter demanding they gather the entire staff to listen to it and then see if they would back the product, I did get my money back. I'll waste no more time untill advised by my fellow forumites, c'mon guys there must be someone out there with the 'knowledge and skill' By the way just got my first job 'lapping' after 40 years 'sliding' me a very happy bunny, just wanting to better myself |

I agree with Gerald and Kevin re: new teaching material....but can we have someone who not only can play but can also teach and has some understanding of how people learn. Ray ------------------ www.ukuke.co.uk |

Get lessons 'Hands on' 'Face to Face' .... LIVE for at least the initial steps, just so you don't develop BAD habits, then get a DVD course when a good one becomes available. IMHO FWIW.------------------ quote: Steel players do it without fretting
