I didn't know where to post this, but I figured some of you might remember this restaurant from back in the day. Apparently, many well-known and revered Hawaiian artists like Sol Ho'opi'i and George Helm performed & recorded here from time to time.

Does anyone know its history and what happened to it? Any pictures or stories to share?

Thanks,

Matt

I remember this restaurant/night club well.
Located directly across the Advertiser newspaper company. Here's a photo of the building from my archives. The Gold Coin was located on the back end of this building.

George Helm performed there for quite awhile along with local comedian Mel Cabang

I don't think this restaurant goes far back to the 40's and 50's, so I don't believe Sol Hoopii had anything to do with playing here. Sol died in 53' and had switched to gospel music in the latter part of his life living on the mainland.

If I have the time later, I'll snoop around at the library to see what I can find.

Thanks a lot, Derrick.

Do you know when it was closed?

Matt,
Went to the library today. Strange, but I couldn't find any news article of this restaurant closing. I checked the phone directory and the restaurant first shown up in 1972 and was not listed by 1980 so the it was a very short lived business.
The owner was listed as Richard Wong. Not sure if this is the former Senator Richard Wong as this is a very common name in Hawaii.

All times are Pacific (US)
