I never see a Deluxe (the ones with two pickups) on eBay. There aren't any under the completed auction listings either. Are they more rare than Stringmasters? Worth how much? How do they sound compared to a stringmaster? I love the smaster sound but would rather have it in a more portable single-neck. I'm guessing the Smaster's size add tone and sustain. |

James, I think generally there is not much difference. The thicker necks on a Stringmaster do seem to give a little better tone and sustain. Many players consider the 1950s swamp ash De Luxes to be better than the instruments of the 60s and 70s. I regret selling my '56, but on the other hand, I can hardly find time to play one steel guitar. My '56 Stringmaster spends a lot of time in the closet because the Bakelite Rick is so portable. I'm fortunate to have two great sounding steels. Anyhow, the De Luxe (6 or 8) is a fine guitar. Good luck in your quest. They do come up on eBay. It just might take a while. Expect to pay in the high hundreds, maybe a grand. [This message was edited by Bob Stone on 06 September 2006 at 02:31 PM.] [This message was edited by Bob Stone on 06 September 2006 at 02:35 PM.] |

James, I own both a 55' long scale Stringmaster T-8 and a 70's Deluxe 8. The 55' bein made from swamp ash with the longer scale length has a tone to die for that sustains into next week. The Deluxe 8 has it's own unique tone and also has the blender control that allows you to dial in some awesome tone, and with the shorter scale is easier for slants which makes it a fun guitar to play but compared to the 55' is no match to my ears. I've heard the earlier year Deluxe 8's had a much fuller tone with better sustain. I've seen quite a few Deluxe 8's on eBay in the last few years and they usually fetch a good price.[This message was edited by Andy Sandoval on 06 September 2006 at 06:09 PM.] |

There weren't as many Deluxes made as there were Stringmaster D-8s and T-8s, so the Deluxes are somewhat harder to find. The 50s models tend to sound better than the 60s models because of the wood. Andy is absolutely right about them fetching a good price - usually involving one of those mad bidding flurries. It's not likely you could find a clean 50s Deluxe for under $1,000 anymore. The prices on these guitars have gone up dramatically in the last couple of years. |
