I'm posting this for someone who is on the resoguit-l list:

My local music store has currently got a collection of 1950s and 1960s lap steels in stock, one of which is a 1962 Fender 6-string, fitted with a Stringtone key changer by Rowe Industrial Products of Toledo, Ohio.

Basically, this little baby allows retuning from open E to C# tuning just by moving a lever. It seems to be out of production, but does anyone know where such a thing might be obtained now? The only ones I've seen on eBay have been fitted to lap steels, and I have a feeling my wife will object to another guitar in the house (don't know why!) but I might be able to smuggle this gizmo unnoticed through the back door to retrofit to an existing lap steel.

You see these pop up on e-bay from time to time, I sold one in like new condition on e-bay for around $60 a few months ago. If you watch for a while there should be a listing that won't require a large mystery box arrival at your home. (Wives believe all parcels that particular size and shape should be a dozen red roses...) It had three tuning selections, I don't remember what the third one was, though. It did work well, with the strings only needing a minor touch-up when changing the tunings.

All times are Pacific (US)
