Ok all you Tele dudes, I am considering purchasing a 52 re-issue but in the neck position it is totally bass tone , no highs whatsoever, that won't work. Does anyone know what value the tone capacitor must be changed to to get the highs back ?

Thanks

Many Tele players prefer to use 250K pots for volume and tone because they bleed off a little more treble and sound a little less brittle, whether using the early 50's circuits or a more modern one. And there are a few guys that use 1meg pots in both locations, for the opposite reason.

My personal preference is to follow the second diagram -- BUT use 250K pots in both locations AND omit the .001 ohm resistor. I have used this on several different Teles and I think it's optimal for me.

I believe that the purpose of the little resistor is to keep the tone more even as the volume is rolled down.

Since you already have 250K pots in the guitar, suggest that you make the other changes and listen before you buy a separate 1meg pot.

The 52 Tele RI comes with the schematic and parts to do the change. It's easy and if you're buying it new your dealer should offer to do it no charge.

The original circuit is only there for historical reasons. It really must be changed to use the guitar in a modern fashion.

The 52 RI also comes with an extra bridge.
The installed bridge has 3 Saddles, the extra has 6.

I purchased "Bent Saddles" from Danny Gatton's tech so I can use the three saddle bridge and still have good intonation.

Keep the parts you replace. They might be a factor in future resale prices.

Joey, very nice guitar. John Hartfords son Jamie just recently went to work for the Everly Bros.,taking Albert Lee's place, and Fender gave Jamie 2 brand new 52 Reissue Tele guitars.I've seen both of them at the music store we both do business with. Some guys have all the luck.

The .001 is a capacitor, not a resistor. Its' purpose is to bleed a small amount of high-frequencies directly to the output when the volume knob is turned below the full-up position, to compensate for the loss of highs resulting from the resistance of the volume knob. When the volume pot is all the way up, there's no resistance in the circuit from the potentiometer (if you've got a good one) and the capacitor is electronically out of the circuit, however many believe that the tone is better if this cap is removed, despite the loss of highs experienced when reducing the volume knob.

Hard to talk Tele after a note like that, but I have a '52 Reissue and it sounds better to me than probably 2 dozen other teles I tried out.

When you get the switch mod done, I'd recommend getting the inside cavity shielded and it'll help the single coil hum a lot.

Thanks Earl!
I saw Jamie with the "Buddy Emmons Show" featuring those two Everly Brothers in Hamilton, Ontario last year. It was just weeks before John passed away.

Jamie fit right in. Nice Bluesy mandolin, too.
They even let him sing "White Light'ning".

It seems the Everlys gave up touring just after the 911 disaster.

I have one of the '52 Reissue Telecasters. I had to do the rewire as mentioned above. These guitars are great. Pickups, wood tone, finish, hardware, etc, Fender did a good thing with this axe. Enjoy it!

On my old mutt Tele I use the 250K vol. pot with the .001 cap BUT I have a 150K resistor in parallel with the cap. The result-no matter where the vol control is the tone is the same. It's an old Schecter guitar trick.

Hey guys thanks for all the input. I am not a stranger to Tele's or electronics , just been away a while. The past many years I have always stopped at every music store in site and played every tele that was hanging. I have played a few 52 RI's and a few days ago played another. It really felt "Fine " . I had no idea that the new ones came with parts , the store "KID" probably doesn't know, he probably doesn't know what the 52 referes to and most likley thinks RI stands for Rhode Island addition. Anyway I have probably owned half dozen tele's thru the years and it appears I will have another soon. The diagram above says it all. Time to send the strat packing...( again )

You guys are the best ....and this Forum is a great place to be,
TP
