Kim Deschamps (c/w Plank-Maple Carter)has the steel seat for Charlie.

Started out kind of slow but had a real good finish. One of the best shows in a while. The Hemsley boy stole the show alright, with kids like this, our music will be in good hands !!!!!

The highlight was Marty and Connie's duet.
I don't think Bob Will's would be surprized at Charlie Robinsons tempo on "Stay A Little
Longer"

Nice shirt Kim.

Also Traie(?) held up well playing guitar beside Earl Scruggs

I enjoyed the show tonight. Johnny was excellent as usual, as was Connie, and Marty. Kim was great with Charlie Robeson. Nice selection of Bluegrass numbers, with beautiful harmony. And the young lad was a real trouper, and sounded great. He'll never forget that experience!

Who noticed something a "little different" about Kim's picking? I thought he played fine but it was unconventional.

GREAT tone and execution Johnny!!!!

Who ever the steel player was who played without picks ------ Man !!!! did he sound good !! I will NEVER say that playing without picks sounds too mellow. He had stinging treble and sounded really wonderful !! All I can think of is he has damn good fingernails and is good at using them !!!!! ***** *****

That's right Moon. No picks, also he used his thumb and ALL 4 fingers, very little blocking.

I had just finished tuning my Carter and was at the bar for a drink when I saw CARTER on the TV and a guy playing with no picks. Threw me for a loop as there wasn't any sound because the jukebox was blasting away.
Just watching was enough for me and the thought occured to me as well: How does he block when his hand is held up like that ???

How many times have we heard someone say: Go for your own style ? Well Kim took that advice and went a country mile with it. I think it will be a style that will soon be emmulated by a lot of new comers to steel. The old guys like me are too set in their ways to even attempt to copy this. It would definately have some distinct advantages !!

And how about Mike Snyder on the last radio portion of the Opry. He had me laughing all the way home and just wouldn't let up !! Wonder if he would shoot me if I posted some of his jokes in Humor......He said he couldn't sing but neither could Porter Wagoner and it never held him back !!

Regards, Paul

I hope that we will have opportunities in the future to see first hand, as we did last night, the pickless technique of playing steel guitar. I stressed in postings of the past, that the method that Kim Deschamps was using is almost as I had described on this forum. I watched intently, while trying to hear his sounds, which were not nearly loud enough above the stage noises, as they were. Sound man, turn up, turn up, and let me hear the steel guitar, I
was thinking during the performance as Kim's fingers went to work. Let me be the 1st to say, a thumb pick that has been trimmed and polished, would be like night and day, if Kim has not already tried one. Developing a more assertive little pinky finger attack, would prove to be of importance while playing five note melody chords. Thanks Kim, for your great performance on last evening's Opry Show!

Picks vs no picks..I think the reality here was that Bud Carter , John and Anne Fabian were elated with Christmas joy when they saw that closeup of the Carter brand name on their TV's right there in their living rooms !

I had a few emails concerning, "Who's this Kim guy??".

I thought I'd reply here for all.
He's known for lap steel and electric slide. his biggest exposures was with the Canadian bands The Cowboy Junkies and Blue Rodeo. Did a fair share of sessions and local clubs here in Hamilton, Ontario. Had his own (sorta blues-rock) band.

He moved to Texas last year and hooked up with Charlie R., who you probably know is married to a Dixie Chick.

Right, Steve. Johnny sounded fantastic on the wood neck Zum. He was probably using picks, too, don't you think? Robison's band did have nice haircuts, though. And apparently Marty's carrying on the tradition of tossing a few back before his Opry spot.

The sound man didn't allow for Kim playing without picks! While I admire the technical ability, the tone suffers somewhat. The Zum won the tone contest.

Janice: Thank you for mentioning Theresa !!
I had meant to this morning when I got in but was too tired to remember. It surely was worth mentioning for without her, none of us would have seen it at all. Wonder if PF gave her a heads up on what to look for ??
That would have been really Kewel !!

Or even better than that, maybe she knew herself !!

Regards, Paul

Great show and I enjoyed Kim's playing too! I was watching a video of the Eagle's "Hell Freezes Over" concert and Don Felder played some pedal steel on that show and he also used no picks. I think he played a ShoBud.

A hats off to the gentleman with no picks. He certainly prooved you can create a decent volume. It sounded thin to me in terms of the overall thickness of signal. However difficult using picks is they do seem to allow for more control. On the other hand I have heard Emmons do it with no drop off in tone...Pete.
