Did anyone watch the "Country" (Hee Hee) award show last night or did Joey Buterfucco outdraw with his super victory over the lady? In anycase Kid Rock and Hank Jr.showed the real class of todays Country. I especially noticed all the fancy attire the Country groups wear nowadays.

Bob Knight pointed out to me that even though the ACM Awards Show is a joke, it still leaned more toward traditional country than the CMA show last fall. Allen Jackson and Brooks & Dunn took their fair share of awards and Toby Watzhisrap went home with his well deserved EMPTY bag. Where else can you tune into TV and see Reba looking like a clown and JoDee taking a shower. Even with their 50 or so #1 hits, I cringe everytime I see Alabama perform. Nearly all of their songs BEG for steel guitar but never get it. One side note, padded butts must be more popular in California than padded bras because EVERY female performer had a perfect one last night, even LeAnne Rymes who forgot her padded bra. So much for my observations.

I can recall a year or two ago when this thread would have had easily over 25 responses by now. I guess, like me, many have flat lost interest.

As long as it's clean, I don't care what the fiddle players' hair look like-- or if they have any -- as long as they can play it country.

Sara Evans: Yes, she's a real cutiepie
but her music... it was a pretty ordinary
tune with some punkish-pop sound
(or was that poppish punk-sound?)
from the band. Boy, It didn't work at all.
Almost like two songs done at the same time.
It's too easy to criticize this stuff...
Watching Ronnie Milsap and his wife made me squirm, but it was real & sweet. He has a great voice and I always liked him.

I played with my band at a pre-awards party at B.B King's, Universal City Walk. It was for the CBS suits who put on the show. Afterwards, I was offered a ticket to go to the awards. I thought about it briefly, flashing on Brooks and Dunn, Reba, Alabama, Toby... "Umm, no thanks..."

I kept flipping the channel back and forth from Celebrity Boxing and the awards.Never got into it too much, no surprises with the outcomes except Butterfuco is sure to become the undefeated Heavy weight womans champion.Maybe he should Challenge Toby whats his name when he's done talkin to himself.

I tend to agree with Ron. The guy did his job well! I thought he was cute too!
I really enjoyed the show. The only objection as always is "the instrumentalist wasn't mention"!
All in all, good show!

I thought it was a pretty show, but Good, hold on now that is another story...The Fiddle player did his job I grant you and I sort of liked the hairdo...Looks like something out of a Charles Bronson "Death Wish" movie...definately thats the Nashville look..You have got to admit everyone noticed him.The old story if you want to be popular stand out in a crowd...He's a spiker but no buddy Spicer.I thought the Kid Rock and Hank JR.song "F" word added class to the show..Ole Dick Clark sure has helped Country music be what it is today...But what the hell is it today? Oh well he who expected nothing ain't never gonna be disapointed.

I feel like I got two for the price of one by leaving the TV off. I was spared both the ACM Awards and Celebrity Boxing.

Can't beat that!

Of course, this coming from someone who has never watched a single scene from Survivor.

Steve,
Yep, (I didn't see it all, either, but) Sara was deffnittly off.
Martina, Tim, and Kenny were a little closer, but, still, were a cent, or two negative. What I got a bigger kick out of, tho, was KR's attempt at harmonizing with Jr. (who is a graduate cum laude, from the Johnny Cash/Bob Dylan school of vocal technique)
Just kiddin, of course-love 'em all, and I watch it (and am glad) cuz they appear to be playing it live.

Still trying to find out if that was Brent and Paul playing the outro.

I've got an idea.
Next year combine the celebrity boxing and the A.C.M. awards then it will have something for everybody.
With the [music?]and fights it would be like being in an old honky tonk but they'll need smoke and beer bottles and scantily clad waitresses to make it effective. And it is a must to have a live band on there no sidelining.

Actually, there was more steel and good country than I thought there'd be. At least you could see the players sometimes, and they were really playing! (We won't talk about last year's show.) Rather than think there's a resurgence of classic country, I tend to think they were just "hedging their bets"...based on the success of the "Oh Brother..." soundtrack. They played it right up the middle, didn't they?

Also, as Theresa noticed, overlooking the instrumentalist's awards was in poor taste. And yet, some producers and directors still wonder why they're losing their audience. HELLO??? I'm more interested in the music than I am in the damn singing. I can hear "hats and bellybuttons" all over the radio dial, and I can see them all day long on CMT. But seeing and hearing a good band???

Now that's a rarity.

What can the musicians union do to help? It's ok not to use a live band, use tracks and tapes on a live show but a none union member would not be allowed to preform with a member of the union. Would it be ok to play a long with tracks and tapes and fake it. Joe

I didn't watch the show, I don't have a tv, but I do know Jason, the producer on Reba's show, and he says she's a joy to work with. And that's something you don't hear very often now days.

I agree with Smiley. Clark is doin' the same in Nashville that he did in Philadelphia 40 years ago. He's 90 percent of the reason Country Music is what it is today. My opinion only.

I'm glad to hear that there is someone else that doesn't have an "idiot box" in their home besides me. It's kind of humorous to hear the comments from people that stare at that thing for hours, surf the channels and then complain that there is nothing to watch! Just think of all the outstanding steel players we'd have today if they'd just throw out the boob tube and spend the time on their steel guitar.

One of Pete Drake's favorite pasttimes was watching television. I read an article one time that he even had one in the bathroom. Television is a lot like playing steel guitar--you can pick and choose what suits you and you can always turn it off. Some of us spend a lot of time on the computer instead of practicing. I remember a few years ago only being able to hear the Opry on the radio because it wasn't on television. Maybe that was better--we accepted the sound rather than what the people looked like. As far as the ACM Awards show it wasn't all that bad--seems like they were having fun OR isn't country music suppose to be fun? Joe

Maybe the ACM will re-evaluate... It's membership (including me), voted in a very rebelious manner by nominating and selecting;

Album of the year--"Oh Brother"

Song of the year--"Man of Constant Sorrow"

It speaks volumes that the membership would select a fictious band (although played by real, raw talanted musicians) for such an award. Many thanks to Alison Krouse and Union Station for their raw talant.

Just like the late 70's and early 80's when country went disco and every Conway song was a "humper", we rebelled and were rewarded for our efforts by the pure sounds of Ricky Skaggs, the Whites, etc. I think this latest round of awards has us heading back in that direction...Travis Tritt and Jerry Douglas's dobro are a good indication...I hope!

Oh ya, Conway Twitty is one of my heroes and IS country music...I just thought the "humpers" he was doing were below his talants.

Erv, i've found that having cable can provide you with hours of worthless entertainment. But having standard reception cuts your viewing time by about 75%. Occasionally you find some prime nuggets like Globetrekker on PBS. That is my number one show. I like the music too. I plan on buying their CDs.

Dick Clark's been invloved with country music since the late 1960s, I really can't see how he alone can get some stick for the state of the show, it's jes showbiz.

I'm kind of curious as to what exactly everyone should dress as, maybe a nice flowery dress for the ladies and nudie suits for the guys?

It's an awards show, everyone's supposed to look over the top, sheesh. It's boring at best, give them something to look forward to.

Imagine a letter to WSM: Dear WSM, I stayed up late last night listening to what you announced as country music. I never heard of Jimmy Rogers, Maybelle Carter, A.P. Carter, George D. Hay blowing an old steamboat whistle--why did you play them? Jimmy Thompson, David Macon, and Dr. Humphrey Bate and his Possum Hunters--these guys will never make it in country music! You should play the pioneers of country music--Marty Robbins, Buck Owens, Willie Nelson, Del Reeves, Jim Reeves (not too much steel there), George Jones, and that young good looking gal Dolly Parton.
