Doe's anybody have the lyric's (or a link) to Charlie Mingus' jazz standard "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat"?
The one's I'm looking for I think are written by Jon Hendricks...not the Joni Mitchell version. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out!

There was a Rahsaan Roland Kirk album that had a version of "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" on it that had lyrics. They were about Lester Young. I can't remember the name of the album, but it had a great version of "There Will Never Be Another You" that had a cool Tuba solo on it, and a version of "Giant Steps" that also had lyrics.

I think the Manhattan Transfer did it also.
But I don't remember the records name.

It's in the vocal Real Book, I think. I'll have a look over the weekend, and if they're there, and you don't have them yet, I'll send them to you.

Here you are:

Goodbye Porkpie Hat

He put all of his soul into a tenor saxophone,
He had a way of talking, 'twas a language all his own,
Life's story, love and glory if you listen when he plays it for you,
Now listen and listen and dig it, can you dig it?
Lester Young is playing what he's feeling
Dealing and dancing you home.

Now someone might have told you, Lester Young he's out of style.
But now I'm here to tell you, Prez is happening right now.
Life's story, love and glory if you listen when he plays it for you
Now listen and listen and dig it, can you dig it?
Lester Young is playing what he's feeling
Dealing and dancing you home.

*****************************

The Vocal Real Book has this version, which it credits to Rahsaan Roland Kirk (though it sounds like Hendricks to me), and also Joni Mitchell's, which I think is better, but not much. If I had to do a vocal version, I'd either start over or combine the two somehow to save the best lines and lose the rest. But that's just me.
