Doe's anybody have the lyric's (or a link) to Charlie Mingus' jazz standard "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat"? The one's I'm looking for I think are written by Jon Hendricks...not the Joni Mitchell version. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out! |

There was a Rahsaan Roland Kirk album that had a version of "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" on it that had lyrics. They were about Lester Young. I can't remember the name of the album, but it had a great version of "There Will Never Be Another You" that had a cool Tuba solo on it, and a version of "Giant Steps" that also had lyrics. I think the Manhattan Transfer did it also. But I don't remember the records name. |

It's in the vocal Real Book, I think. I'll have a look over the weekend, and if they're there, and you don't have them yet, I'll send them to you. [This message was edited by John Kavanagh on 08 November 2003 at 10:19 AM.] |

Here you are: Goodbye Porkpie Hat He put all of his soul into a tenor saxophone, Now someone might have told you, Lester Young he's out of style. ***************************** The Vocal Real Book has this version, which it credits to Rahsaan Roland Kirk (though it sounds like Hendricks to me), and also Joni Mitchell's, which I think is better, but not much. If I had to do a vocal version, I'd either start over or combine the two somehow to save the best lines and lose the rest. But that's just me.
