If you have access to RFD-TV on satelite chances are you seen the BIG JOE POLKA SHOW.

This has got to be some of the absolute worst in TV musical entertainment i've ever seen. However, it must be a very popular venue up in Medina, MN where it's produced. Theres aways a packed house with polka bands, dancers and spectators. For the life of me I can't understand why a good Steel Guitar show wouldn't maybe pull a better audience.
We play an instrument that totally fascinates people watching. I think it would be a good move for RFD to consider this idea. I guess I'm just not a big fan of POLKA's and can't see why a silly show like this is getting nationwide exposure.

I won't say more than that (1)-Polka goes a long way for me! When I lived in Pa. back before ’67, I had to participate in Polkas with almost every ‘Country’ band that I ever worked with. Polka-Music is very popular in various parts of the country, but; not in all! But then, that can be said about all types/styles of music! Here we are, back to square~one¡

Nick.. I agree,, corny.. BUT so is a LOT of stuff on RFD-TV.. To be honest, I think it was designed that way... Lots of folks enjoy the "corny" format on RFD TV...

I kind of like good polka music.. I feel it lends itself to E9 steel playing quite well!... Wouldn't want to do it for a living tho'... bob

"Happy music for happy people!" I love the show! Although I find it homorous. Is the Jimmy Sturr Show still on? I saw the three-legged dancer on that show. Truely bizarre! One has to consider the ethnic backgrounds of much of the midwest. Lots of Germans, Poles, Slovacks, Swedes, etc. settled in those areas.

Nick,I will take Polka any day over MOST of that rock crap comming out of Nashville these days.
Take a look at the crowds though and most of them old Bo-Hunkers are old enough to collect social security.Won't be to long before Polka goes the way of square dancing and Western Barn Dance Music.
Starting to hear more Mexican Polka on the A-M radio stations.

What Texas Swing is to Austin, and Dixieland is to New Orleans, Polka is to Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, etc.

Down here where I live, it's "beach music". Barf!

Greatly said Myron. You know Nick, we could all be listening to Banjo music all day. I would say Big Joe paid quite a bit of money for that Tuxedo, shouldn't put down his kind of music. I know you may be a heck of a player, but jammin with a tuba player as a bass, accordian as a fill instrument, and playing harmony to a trumpet is a gas. And to see your hinney in a swiss Alps outfit must be quite a picture. Uff Da Ole.

Fellas, Fellas, remember Smiley Roberts grew up playing steel for Tommy Overshefski.(later change his name to Oversomething or other).Have you guys ever heard Smiley play?He started out on Accordian but kept pinching himslf, graduated to Tuba until someone threw a fish in it. Thats when he discovered it was easier to tune a fish.He took up the steel because it attracted the younger ladies But the cabbage and beans Made him become a "regular" player in the back row. So that is why the rest of the band was always out front.

Yes-ah, and a-one-anna-two-anna.... Yup, I'm in the heart of big-time east-coast polka country, Pennsylvania, and also lived in the heart of Western Mass polka country for quite a while. I've heard some really bad polka bands, but also some real good ones. Good and polka are not necessarily a contradiction in terms.

I don't get RFD-TV, so I can't comment on this show specifically. But I admit that I rarely see good polka on TV. It's usually so watered-down and lukewarm that it sounds like bad muzak. On the other hand, there's absolutely nothing inherently wrong with the two-step rhythm. If I want to get people over 50 up and dancing at a gig, either a swing or two-step number is the way to go. In fact, a good polka or two-step number swings. A bad polka doesn't. My opinion, of course.
