![]() I was just listening to Van's new country CD. Its kind of a re-creation of the past but there is some terrific playing and Van is in fine voice. It isn't groundbreaking but I have to admit I enjoyed it more than his last few albums. In my opinion he lost the plot a bit around 'Inarticulate Ramblings of the Heart'. The production is wonderful and it mostly covers my absolute favourite period of country music. I don't imagine it will reach a huge audience but at this point Van probably isn't bothered - he just felt like doing it and his love of this music really shines through. I guess he'll be criticised for 'dabbling' in so many genres -first an Irish folk album, then a soul album, then a blues album, now a country album. Personally I think its great. Strongly recomended. Matt 1. THERE STANDS THE GLASS 2. HALF AS MUCH 3. THINGS HAVE GONE TO PIECES 4. BIG BLUE DIAMONDS 5. PLAYHOUSE 6. YOUR CHEATIN' HEART 7. DON'T YOU MAKE ME HIGH 8. MY BUCKET'S GOT A HOLE IN IT 9. BACK STREET AFFAIR 10. PAY THE DEVIL 11. WHAT AM I LIVING FOR 12. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP 13. ONCE A DAY 14. MORE AND MORE 15. ![]() Van played here last night at the Ryman Auditorium. I was fortunate to be there as guest of good pal Cindy Cashdollar who just started touring with Van in support of this new album. He already has a great 12 piece band with a full horn section; he was able to cover about every phase of his career and it was a great show. Besides Cindy he also added Asleep at the Wheel fiddle player Jason Roberts for this tour, and though he and Cindy didn't play the whole concert they didn't just play the country stuff either, they were integrated into the band for a lot of the other material too. Lots of solos all around; Cindy really had some great moments, and got several ovations after particular solos. Unfortunately it's a pretty short tour (in the U.S. at least). I think they're playing in Boston tonight... |

![]() Van The Man. This is cool. I can just imagine what it sounds like with Cindy and jason playing with him. Two monster musicians. I'm going to try and catch the tour. [This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 08 March 2006 at 09:09 AM.] |

![]() quote: I think it's admirable that he's willing to try new things. Van Morrisson has been around now for 40 years. He would not have lasted this long of he was just re-creating his hits from the 60s. I admire Linda Ronstadt for the same reason- her willingness to venture out of the tied-and-true safety zone. |

![]() Someone got me this CD cuz they know I love country. Personally to me it sounds more Vanish than countryish but that is cool cuz I've always dug all the strange and wonderful things that Van has come up with over the decades. |

![]() Van Morrison and his band were on the 'Parkinson Show' last Saturday evening playing 'Big Blue Diamonds' The steel player was playing C6th on what looked like a Zum. I thought that the steel on the CD was all lap steel? |

![]() Matt, Thanks for the news. This forum is my favorite source for finding out about the best music. No more Rolling Stone and all that for me. Do they still have that radio channel called Radio Luxenbourg, which waa all in English? In the 70's, that was a great source of the best new music ------------------ |

![]() Most of the album is pedal steel, very well done too. Some very nice dobro work also. The SINGING is Van all the way, But the music sounds like late 50's Just a bit of vocal chorus from the 70's style. |
