Question for you chord gurus:
In the song, "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden", at the phrase beginning "So smile for a while........." I think it goes as follows, but I am open to correction.

In the key of D
[G] So smile for a while and [A] lets be jolly, [Am/C] love shouldn't be so [B] melancholy, [Em] come along and share the good times while we [Gm]caaaaaaa [A]aan....

The main point of contention seems to be the Am with C bass beginning at "love shouldn't be....."
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks in advance. Dan

Just play a regular Am instead of the Am/C.

It's actually a very good example of the 'Half diminished' or "m7b5"

Dan, the half diminished chord is normally the one immediately prior to the 6-7th.. In this case the chord BEFORE "Melancholy" It is best as an F#m7b5/C.. The C bass note is not necessary but it does confuse the average listener into thinking that the chord is a 5m6 in the given key with a b3 bass note.
The notes of the F#m7b5 and the Am are not that far removed to make much difference, it's just a little more 'colourful' as the Half Diminished.

F#m7b5 = Am6/F#
I hope this helps. There is bound to be someone here who will 'Take me to Task' It seems to be a popular game these days, so forgive me if I only respond via DIRECT E-Mail..
Basil.

Dan, which version are you referring to, The original Lynn Anderson version or a newer version? I have heard this chord approached differently on various versions.

Stephen, the one I have been listening to lately is the one by Martina McBride on her new CD. Dan
