![]() Question for you chord gurus: In the song, "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden", at the phrase beginning "So smile for a while........." I think it goes as follows, but I am open to correction. In the key of D The main point of contention seems to be the Am with C bass beginning at "love shouldn't be....." |

![]() Just play a regular Am instead of the Am/C. |

![]() It's actually a very good example of the 'Half diminished' or "m7b5" ------------------ quote:

![]() Dan, the half diminished chord is normally the one immediately prior to the 6-7th.. In this case the chord BEFORE "Melancholy" It is best as an F#m7b5/C.. The C bass note is not necessary but it does confuse the average listener into thinking that the chord is a 5m6 in the given key with a b3 bass note. The notes of the F#m7b5 and the Am are not that far removed to make much difference, it's just a little more 'colourful' as the Half Diminished. F#m7b5 = Am6/F# |

![]() Dan, which version are you referring to, The original Lynn Anderson version or a newer version? I have heard this chord approached differently on various versions. |
