At 6 PM Pacific Daylight Time last night, KZLA, the only "country" music station in the Los Angeles area, switched formats to a "world beat"-R&B--hip-hop--pop format. Legendary DJ Rick Dees has returned to LA radio to be the station's "star" DJ. I was talking to a couple of friends about this last night, and their reaction was, "So what? That crap they were playing wasn't real country anyway--just music by musicians who couldn't make it in rock so they went over to what they call country." Thank God for XM Radio. |

I concur wholeheartedly. KZLA has been, at best, a joke in L.A. for years. They have done nothing to promote, in any way, the SoCal country scene, only themselves. The chickens have come home to roost with KZLA's trading of one set of boneheads for another, IMHO ... Bon Voyage and good riddance. |

KZLA was parasitically shameless enough to attach themselves to one or t'other of the "Down From the Mountain" concerts in LA. Good riddance to KZLA. Country Music in Southern California is no worse off for their disappearance. (Two words: X. M.) |

So Cal hasn't had a real country station since KLAC AM in the '70's. They were the real deal, playing all good stuff. I even remember hearing Tony Booth records... There was one DJ...can't remember his name...but starting at about 1:30 or 2am he would start saying hi to all the pickers he knew would be driving home from gigs, calling us all by name over the air. Where in the world does that happen anymore?? |

Watch XM Satellite Radio grow. Many here in western N.Y. are picking it up specificly for country music. Commercial country's days are numbered. Hello Dale Watson. |

If you are driving to Vegas KFRG in San Bernardino can be received nearly to Barstow. And, they play some of the good oldies. Toooo much poor taste in LA for music and just about everything else. |

Rick--we can get KFROG real well here in Fullerton, and in most of north Orange County. They are marginally better than most, and they do play a few oldies, especially on Saturday nights. Sonny--I remember KFOX too--they had a great country line-up. One of their DJs, Ted Quillan, lived right down the street from me. Remember KGBS 1020 AM? KFOX with ,Biff Collie, Lee Ross,The Squeekin Deacon back in the 61-62 days. Live Sunday Broadcast with the Deacon then it was down to Georges Round-up in Long Beach or the Hitching Post in Gardena. What a loss to america it is to America thatwe can no longer hear KFOX. What was that jock's name who used to write songs with Bobby Bear? I remember him saying at noon every day, "My mama says I gotta' come in now. But I'll be back at 9 tomorrow and we can play again." KZLA and the others like them are no loss. I stopped listining a those stations a long time ago. I wish someone in the broadcasting business would discover us. We spend money on the sponcsoes merchandise too. Radio should be free. Thank God for XM but I miss the "Rhythum Ranch" heard on KUBA 1600 on your dile, 6 days a week in Yuba City, Ca. between 4 and 6 PM back when Hank, Lefty, Webb and Tommy Collins were the thrill.
