Topic: 15 inch Standel Speaker?

I have an old Standel Super Imperial Amp which at one time was housing two 15 inch speakers. The amp blew up on me years ago due to my lack of knowledge about electronics while I was experimenting where I had no business. It was a sad loss for me and I long ago trashed the head after I was told no one could repair the amp. For a while I kept the amp around hoping to stumble upon a head I could transplant to the cabinet. To make a long story a little shorter the cabinet was cut in two parts so I could use the speakers as extensions or whatever. I would like to know if any speaker guru's out ther can tell me what you know about the speakers. They are 15 inch and there is a gold colored plate on them that say"System Designed Transducer" with two large red S'es side by side then the numbers 115 and below that is the writing "IMP with 8 below it. then serial# 1422 and the words below that"The Standel Co El Monte Calif" Can anyone tell me the value of this speaker? I was told a while back it was a JBL D130. What do you think folks? Anyone want to jump in?

The 8 Imp stand for 8 ohm impedance, fairly standard in amplifiers of that era. There is quite a web site for Standel amplifiers, which are being produced again. The company probably has the information you are seeking. They used a lot of JB Lansing speakers, and they are great speakers. Try contacting them on the web. |

I personally have never seen a JBL D130 that was not specifically marked as being that. JBL did not make speakers that were just painted black and used in all sorts of amps. I have played through several of the old Imperial series of Standell amps from that period. The amps that had JBL D130s in them are clearly marked as being a JBL product.Harvey Gerst designed the D series for JBL. He posts over on the rec. audio. pro forum. You might do a search and post an inquiry there. If the speakers are indeed JBL D130s then you have a pair of great drivers. If you ever have them worked on be sure to ONLY use JBL kits for repair. You can substitute various JBL voice coils and paper kits for repair. VERY expensive!!!! |

I still have a JBL 15 from one of my old Standels in a cabinet in my music room. Still sounds great after all these years! |

Bill,
are there any numbers stamped on the frame? Most likely there will be a 6-digit number, this has the manufacturer code and date. If you can find one post it. |

Chris,
I forgot to say that there is 6 numbers in white ink on the paper part of the speaker and the numbers are 213533. I will see if there are any stamped numbers. Thanks to all of you for your insights here.

The 6 numbers will be in ink on the rim of the speaker. Right where the rim screws to the baffle. Is the speaker a cast frame or a stamped frame?? |

If I'm not mistaken your speakers were made by Trusonic for Standel. The SS series was a cast-frame ultra heavy-duty J.B.L. type unit. I worked for the local Standel dealer when I was in high school and giged on a Vox Super Beatle with 2 cabinets loaded with 8 of the 12 inch version of these. We sold a lot of them because (for us) they held up better AND sounded better than J.B.L.!!! |

My goal is to establish the value and brand in hopes of either selling or trading for a 4 ohm JBL for my Webb 614. I currently have one of these in my Webb but Mr Webb told me the 4 omn is best for max power. b0b move this if you want to.
