I'm just about to test drive a Steel King. Can some of you post your settings? I noted Buddy Emmons' settings and the interesting thing was that he placed the mid-shift at 11:00. If I read the controls correctly the detent spot (center) is at about 500 -- therefore 11:00 is lower than that. With my Peavey's I always had the mid-shift around 800. Just interested in others' input. Thanks in advance, Boo

Hi! Boo:
I set mine just about like Buddy does except I run my treble slightly less at about 10.5 and my bass a little hotter at about 2.Tilt is also at 10.5 and reverb at 5. I use a Zum with TT 17.5 pickups. I find that you get a good tone at the Emmons settings and then tweek from there. Great amp. Good luck.

Thanks, Morton. I appreciate your input. I look forward to hearing about the settings that others are using with this amp. Thanks again. Boo

EQ Tilt - 9 o’clock for C6 and around 10 or 11 o’clock for E9.
Treble - around 11 o’clock.
Mid Level - 10 or 11 o’clock. This control doesn’t work unless the Mid Frequency knob is moved from the center setting.
Mid Frequency - 11 o’clock.
Bass – 1 o’clock
Reverb – 10 o’clock
The Steel King is designed to get a good sound with all knobs straight up, but as you know different guitars will require variations from those points. I’ve tried three or four different brand guitars with the amp and found a good tone for all of them. The settings I gave you are for my JCH, but the amp is so user friendly, you’ll not have to hunt long for a tone that compliments your guitar.

Sam Marshall designed this amp to sound
excellent with everything straight up
(neutral). It's really best to start there
if you're new to the amp. Then, depending
on the steel, pickups, environment, etc.
you can tweek from there. The tonal range
of the EQ adjustments is extremely flexible.
Chuck - I've got the gain & master at 12
o'clock as well. When the band gets a bit
louder, I crank up the master some & press
the limiter in to avoid any distortion.

I know this thread is old, but since I jsut got My Steel King today I did a little research. I found the settings that best work for me and the Fender does have a Webb Amp sound, just not as much grainy sound or growling sound. These settings were compliments of Mr. Al Udeen. A fine gentlman and a very fine player that passed those talents onto his son Chad. Thanks Al for helping even though you didn't even know you did!

Roger,
It depends on what time your looking at the Steel King !!....

Put everything at 12 o'clock and adjust to taste ....Some like briter, some like bassier , some like more mids .....The SK also sounds different when different steels are played thru it ....LOUD to me may not be LOUD to you ....Like I said earlier ....adjust to taste ...Great sounding amp !!....Jim

Here's what I used on the bandstand last night:

Tilt - 10 o'clock
Treble - 12 o'clock
MidLevel - 10 o'clock
MidFreq - 2 o'clock
Bass - 2 o'clock

These settings didn't sound Webbish, but they did sound a bit Evansish!

This was in a large hall, playing in front of about 1,500 people. You know. Your basic Texas bar-b-que.

What effect does the mid frequency have on the sound.I can turn it and it doesnt seem to effect the sound at all.I assume it works together with the mid level?

Trap, it doesn't have any effect if the mid control is center. But, it cuts or adds the selected frequency depending upon which way you turn the knob. They have to be used together to adjust the tone.

Mine sounds just like a "Fender"? as I have never owned a "Web"etc I can`t make comparison but used a dual showman for years and to me the SK is just Fender through and through...just a heck of a lot more power and a tad cleaner+ easier harmonics..I could go on and on but my first impression was how cool to get a good sound (with the knobs straight up)without having to hunt for it?? Just like all the other Fenders I have owned!!!

One thing weird about the Steel King tone controls is that I can't figure out how to roll off the highs all the way. You can turn the treble and tilt all the way off and its still brite sounding.
