Guy's and gal's,
I was speaking to Dave over at Avatar speakers, and he has agreed to make a batch of special order speaker cab's for us steel players....Take a look at this link, and go to the G-112 speaker cabs....He will be making a small batch that will have the cutout for 15" speakers....The will have the same dimensions as the G112, but will have a 15" speaker cutout..
The cab's are deep, and will have the semi open back ...These cab's should really sound great !!....The price unloaded will be the same as what is listed ....Here is the link to Avatar Speakers.....I hope this will help out a few of you looking for inexpensive high quality cabs....Jim

Real nice, but a bit more then I can afford. I built a 15" speaker cab using an old Peavey Bandit enclosure, a vintage JBL 15" and a baltic birch baffle.

There is a manufacturer in Longmont, CO that makes excellent ported speaker cabinets. I bought one for $90.00 plus shipping and installed a 15" speaker that came stock with my 1999 Evans amp. I replaced the Evans speaker with a 1501-4 Black Widow. The cabinet from Colorado is working great.

I built mine out of a couple of boards that a theatre company was throwing away. Lest you think it's 'cause I'm cheap let me mention that they were already painted black.

Jim,

I thought they are nice speaker cabinets from what one could see in the photos. Baltic birch is nice cabinet material solid and void free. Certainly a level above std plywood or pressboard in quality.

The price is in line with any custom cab builder I know of. Sell some pop bottles or get a paper rout.
You'll have a new cab in no time. Is everyone as broke as I am? It seems extra hard to make any money as a musician these days.

Actually I thought that the price was pretty in line with a good quality cab ... Guy's are spending over 3 grand for a new pedal steel, I would be very surpised to see them plugging into a milk crate with a 15" speaker in it !!... I"m wondering what the cost is on the speaker cab's that Ricky Davis had made ?.... I have some home made cab's myself, and they're really nice cab's, but for nice deep cab's like this , and made of 3/4 inch Birch ply ( over $50 for a 4 x 8 sheet ) , it's a no brainer to me .....I do understand being happy with whatever you play through ... I just thought I'd throw it out to you guy's that might find an interest ....Jim

I went to the specific page for the speaker and I quote:
"This cab is available complete but speakerless for $159. + $19 shipping. "

That seems like a pretty fair deal for what looks like a nice cab.

Jim - if that unloaded price is correct, that sounds like a deal to me. Sounds perfect for my Dual Showman Reverb Head. I've got a K-series JBL just waiting for something. I think the Baltic birch + deep cab makes all the difference also. No comparison to plywood or (heaven forbid) pressboard, imo. Thanks for the info, I'll call them.

cabinet, He was happy, so were a
few others.
Email me and I'll quote you

Yes I've built cabinets and have had cabinets built and have bought cabinets; and they ALL take a Back Seat to the Cabinets Rick Johnson built for me shown below.

Rick,
Your cab's are top's !!...I have seen other cab's with finger jointed Pine, and they were quite expensive....I in NO way am belittleing your cab's , but surely thought that they would cost a lot more money than what Avatar is offering, and those are still too much money for some players ...
Sincerely, Jim

Dave at Avatar is a great guy to do business with and has a fine product made here in the USA. I used 2 of his 12 bass cabs and he uses Eminence drivers that are 3 grades better than the comparable manufacturers Eminence loaded offerings. They sound great and are very well built.

This is absolutely not any kind of negative about Avatar. I have no experience with them but I am aware of much good feedback about them. But just so that there are no mistaken ideas here-----I am real pleased with my new Fender style 2x12 pine cab from Rick J---played it out last week for the first time and it killed. The price was lower than Avatar. This has NOTHING to do with price wars or anything. Just don't want people to assume that a "boutique" builder is priced out of reach. Thanks, Rick, and my best to Avatar. (Is there anything else I can say to be sure that nobody thinks I'm trying to undermine Avatar?)

The fingerjoint/dovetail..etc method of
joining the wood only takes 30 minutes
and doesn't make the cab more expensive.
I think its the best method.
Jon
Thanks for your comments on the 2/12
I'm glad you liked it.

Jon,
I in no way took your note as Avatar bashing .....As a matter of fact , I am glad that you posted ....I would much rather have finger jointed Pine.....My early guitar amps are finger jointed Pine, and they have a great "Piano" type tone that come from them ....The notes seem to bloom very nicely with Pine , especially aged Pine ....It resonates so well, and really add's to the tone .....Jim
