Topic: Messenger Service ?

Lately I've been receiving an avalanche of popup spams, all framed in a window called "Messenger service" (this is NOT MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger).
They do not come through e-mail, they just pop up on the screen out of nowhere. If I make the mistake of leaving my connection on over night, there are usually at least 15 layered over one another, waiting for me in the morning.
I've cleaned out my cookie file, no change.
Can anyone advise me on how to get rid of this annoyance ?

John, possibly your problem is with software that has installed itself silently from web visits to various sites. Check out Ad Aware. It says "With its ability to comprehensively scan your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives for known datamining, aggressive advertising, and tracking components ...."I use the free version and was amazed at all the crap that was removed from my Win2k machine . John: This seems to work and it does not disrupt Instant Messinger if you use that. It is a different application. Do this:Go to Start, then Run and type in services.msc Click Ok Scroll to Messenger, select it, right click it and choose Properties. Under startup choose "Disabled", then choose Stop. When stopped, click Ok.
Easy fix

John: Also this cannot be disabled on Win 98/ME. The procedure I gave you is for XP.
If you have a different OS such as NT, go through "Administrative Tools" and find "Services". Then all is the same. You might just check the "dependency" tab the bottom box should say "No Dependencies"and have a little i in a balloon.
BTW this is not stealthware so Ad-Ware will not find it.

Recluse,That is the exact solution. By default "messenger" service is enabled by Windows. It was supposed to be used so in a Network Enterprise environment the administrator could send you a pop up telling you to reboot or something, but of course the PORN industry has figured this out and taken advantage of it. Just disable the Messenger service and it will take care of it. Cheers!
Mark P.S. The Pop-UP I received the other day was telling me that they had a squirrel in their pants! I am not sure...but is this good or bad???

I'd like to thank each one of you who took the time to reply.
I've taken all the above advice. First I followed Steve's instructions (hey, they were great. You should write some "for dummies books!) and immediately the annoying 'messenger service' thingies quit appearing.
Don's freeware link is pretty cool. Thanks! It found (drum roll) 128 little gremlins in my attic. (!) I sent them all to Alcatraz.
Mark, the best pop-up ad I had was to advertise a software that prevents pop-up ads. Hmm. Nobody ever had a squirrel in their pants though. I feel so robbed...
