In an article I read a few days ago about the FTC sueing a California Company over their exploiting Microsoft's Window's Messenger Service in Windows 2000 and XP, (not to be confused with Microsoft's instant messaging chat service). I would like to pass on to those, who like me, didn't know how to stop this type of spam.
The article tell's how to prevent pop-up spam by Disabling the messenger service.
I followed the recommendation in the article and have not been bothered by pop-up spam since last Sunday, so I believe it really does work.
Here is how you can disable your messenger service:
Click Start then
click Control Panel (or point to settings, and then Click Control Panel)
Double-click Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
Double-click Messenger
In the Startup type list, click Disabled.
Click Stop, and then click O.K.
This should stop those annoying pop-up ads.
You can also turn this feature back "ON" anytime you want.
Microsoft says they will start shipping Windows with this feature in the "OFF" position from now on.
