About 2 weeks ago I tried to run one of the YouTube video's and got the message that I didn't had the latest flash player with a link to install it. These video's ran OK before. I tried to install Adobe Flash Player 9 over and over again but this failed. Since that moment I tried many, many things, including checking the browser settings, adding YouTube and the Adobe download pages to the trusted zone, installing the betaversion of IE 7, restarting my computer, etc. but it still doesn't work. I have Windows XP SP2 running.
Tonight I got the same error message (no latest flash player) on my companies laptop with Windows 2000 Professional. I couldn't install Flash Player either but I don't have administrator rights on the laptop (I doubt that I need this for Flash player though)

What's wrong / what am I doing wrong - how can I solve this?

Ad, I experienced a similiar problem where I couldn't install the flash player from the web site so I wound up downloading the flash player exe file and installing it that way. Check your mail.

Ad, I am currently running XP Home Edition with Explorer 6 SP2 and had the same problem. Finally around the 4th or 5th attempt to download Adobe Flash Player 9 it finally downloaded and worked so I can now play the YouTube videos. I know I had gotten a little frustrated not having anything to go on such as the progress of the download. Unless you've already tried the following you might go to: Tools> Internet Options> Privacy(tab)> Advanced(button) and make sure to select "Accept" for BOTH First and Third cookies and then of course click "OK". The other thing I did was to disable my Firewall. The preceeding may have been coincidental, I'm really not sure, but I know after I did the above it finally downloaded correctly and allowed me play the YouTube videos. The other thing I noticed when I tried to download Adobe Flash Player 9 was that it didn't seem to download very fast though I have a "dial up" modem pc. Once you click to to install Adobe Flash Player 9 you might wait perhaps ten minutes or so - that's what i did as well and then a yellow "security" bar popped up underneath my browser and WITHIN this yellow security bar it said something like "click here to install" so I did. If I remember correctly another security popup screen come up and of course I granted permission to install. I did NOT do anything whatsoever with regard to "administrator rights" - it obviously didn't affect this pc anyhow because Adobe Flash Player 9 finally worked properly though I repeat the above could have been coincidental. I just thought I'd drop you a line here in hopes that it may work for you. If this doesn't work for you hopefully someone else can give some suggestions.

Marlo, those are great suggestions and instructions!

Ad, please keep us updated with how this plays out.

Sometimes your browser settings need to to tewaked to allow downloads or software installation, especially for IE7. Check the Advanced Tab of your Internet Options to see if you are allowing "Install on Demand" and Install on Demand (Other)." Also, look under the Security section (Advanced Tab) to see if there is a checkmark in "Allow software to run or install, even if the signature is invalid."

Next, go to your Internet Options Programs Tab and click the Manage Add-ons button. Find Shockwave Flash Object and ensure that it is not disabled (try to enable it). Also, highlight that item, then click on Update ActiveX (if you are online).

I run as a Power User on XP Professional and the update for Flash just failed for me too. I will try to find out if this is a user permissions issue or something else.

Installation Instructions

1. Installation of Adobe Flash Player may require administrative access to your PC, which is normally provided by your IT department. For the installation to succeed, you may be asked to close all open browser windows during the installation.

Computer user permissions
User permissions determine whether or not you are allowed to install ActiveX controls or plug-ins. If you don't have Administrator access to your Windows NT, 2000, or XP equipped computer, you may not be able to install the Flash Player successfully. Permissions can be tricky but, in general, you should be able to install and use the Adobe Flash Player if your system Administrator has provided full access to the Macromed directory (C:\Winnt\System32\Macromed\).

Here is what I had to do to install Flash into Internet Explorer, as a Power User, in Windows XP Professional.

Try to install the update via Control Panel > Internet Options > Manage Add-Ons > Update ActiveX (for Shockwave Flash). When the installation fails after accepting the popup certificate do the following.

Open the General Tab on Internet Options, click the Settings button, then View Files. Your Temporary Internet Files will open in a new window. Click on the View button and select Details. Click on the "Type" label at the top of the list of items, to sort by file type. Look for the file named "swflash.cab" and drag it onto your desktop. Double click on swflash.cab, on your desktop. It will be opened by Windows. If it opens in Winzip or WinRar you will have to extract the files to a new folder on your desktop to finish this.

Assuming you are able to open the swflash.cab in a window and view the files, you should see a file named GetFlash.exe. Right-click on it and select Run As and select Administrator, or an administrator level account and password to Run the program. Accept the terms and accept the installation of the ActiveX control signed by Macromedia. Installation should proceed through completion, then prompt you to reboot.

This is all because Macromedia has decided to force Flash objects to write to a System directory. Only Administrators usually have that privilege. This is a flawed process.

Let me know if this fixes the problem for you. I am rebooting now and will report back when Windows restarts.

That method failed to upgrade my Flash Player from it's previous version to the new one, but I found another download page, here. Go to that page and download the Flash installer to your computer and run it as an administrator. Close all browser windows to allow the plugin to install.

Here is what I just had to do to finally upgrade my Flash Player to the new version.

Forget about using Run As from a User account. Logon to an account that has full Administrator privileges. Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to navigate to your Windows directory. You may have to reset your Folder Options to allow you to see the files in the System directory.

When you get to C:\Windows look for a sub-directory (folder) named Downloaded Program Files and find the file named Shockwave Flash Object. Right-click on it and choose Properties, then Version. Note the version number.

Ensure that you are online, then right-click on Shockwave Flash Object and select Update. It will go to the download site and download the current version. You may have to allow this in your firewall rules if challenged.

Accept the terms and allow the control installation to Run. When it finishes installing go back to that file and right-click and choose Properties. It should have the new version listed under the Version tab.

Log off the Administrative account and back onto your User account. Flash will be the new version. You will have to go through this until Abode learns how to install a program or update it with less user privileges accounts.

Hi,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you but it has been a busy week.

Andy,
I tried to install Flash Player 8 that I downloaded from your website, but I got next error message:

quote:
Error 1094.Module
C: \WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash8.ocx
Failed to register. HRESULT -214220473. Contact
your support personnel.

WIZ,
Thanks for the Shockwave post. I found that it was not present in the Windows directory, so I downloaded the latest version. Unfortunately it did not help in getting Flash Player installed. I still haven't fixed it.

Anybody know how to fix this?

Wiz,

Isn't it strange that all at once more people have problems with Flashplayer? It just strikes me that we now see several postings about youtube viseo's not displayable.

I agree that this is more than a coincidence. Something is afoot that is breaking YouTube videos that rely on the formerly Macromedia, now Adobe, Flash plugin. Come Watson, we have work to do...

This could also be a cookies problem. Try allowing ALL cookies, then try upgrading Flash, reboot and revist youtube.

Wiz,

I set it to "accept all cookies" but it didn't work. I already had Adobe and Youtube site added to the "safe" websites last week.
