I am posting this for my friend Greg.He underwent surgery yesterday 2-22-03 for nerve
damage which left his right hand numb due to
an accident years ago.

Under normal use of his right hand it is OK.
but his desire to play steel guitar is hampered by this old injury.

Through my helping him to play his dad's old
Fender Dual Pro guitar,he discovered he was
not able to execute his fingers enough to pick each string in a group or single notes.

He plays very fine trombone just like his dad
and the numbess was in no way detrimental to
his trombone playing. He is able to use the
hand but not his fingers.

His determination to play steel guitar is what prompted Greg to go through this extremly delicate surgical procedure and it
will be sometime when the prognosis will be determined positive or negative.

Since he no longer has a computer and plans
on getting new system when he returns from the hospital,he is unable to see what I am
posting.

He will have extensive therapy to determine
whether or not his right hand will be healed
and usefull. The surgery was his own personal
decision based solely on his desire to play
steel guitar.

He is a beleiver and has confidence he will be healed. So Get well Greg, we have a lot of work to do when you get home

Gene
Casey is always on duty 24 hours a day and she asked me to not to forget to say hello to you,she wants to e mail you but she is trying to make certain she will make you feel good. She's shy and she asked me if it would be OK for her to write you and I told her YES..

She has Greg in her prayers and a few people here on the Forum as well.

Thanks Cowboy

Hey Jody, Pass along our best wishes during what i feel will be successful surgery and therapy. With his determination, will, and you for a teacher, I know he's got the battle almost won already.

Greg. He's doing fine. I bought him a CD player and he is having a good time listening to great steel guitar CD's.

Gene he is playing your "Just For Me" CD and
It's one of his favorites. With a player like Gene Jones, they will all forget about me,,Casey has switched from the HCOA to Gene
Jones, and her reason "quote" Poppy I can dance to Mr.Jones music,,you play too noisy and too fast,,LOL.look what you have done to
me,you took my fan club away

Greg is doing fine but the results wont be known for a while..Thanks for asking, and thank you John,we both appreciate your concern and prayers.

Thanks to those of you who were so very kind
to offer your prayers and thoughts of me.

I have returned home and will begin therapy in a few weeks since the healing process will take some time.

I am happy to say that my friend Jody will be playing with a 17 piece band on March 15 at the Westchester Country Club. And to make it even sweeter,he will be playing my dad's and now. my Fender Dual Pro guitar.

This is a special event for me. Jody will be
performing with the McGuire sisters and Carmel Quinn former members of the Arthur Godfrey Show,,,what a way to celebrate St Patty's day for Lisa and myself.

And to think of Jody surrounded by those pretty Irish Lassies. And Jody isn't even Irish.

It should be fun.

Thank all of you again.

Greg Sullivan ooops I cant forget my mate and wife Lisa.

Sheesh...I never noticed this thread until just a few moments ago. (for shame). Anyway Greg, I am pleased to learn you came through your surgery as well as you did. Now, perhaps you can give that Jody character a run for his money on the steel guitar...up until now, he has been the best, but that can't last forever...start practicing buddy.
As for Jody hitting the big time with the McGuire Sisters...hey, that's great, pal. Keeping secrets from me ?
Jody, you'll be performing the day before my 75th! I missed out being Irish by one day.
Lastly, my dear wife of 50 years, Mary is about to undergo a miserable bit of surgery on Wednesday which will put her into a wheelchair for 8 weeks minimum. I hope and pray all will go well with her.

I'm sorry to tell you that Jody called and informed me that the show at the Westchester
Country Club has been cancelled.

There is a dispute with Local 802 and AGVA.
So there it goes, once again the mighty hands
of the Unions has spoken. The American Guild of Variety Artists and Local 802 AFM have an
issue that was not resolved and is being reviewed at this time. So rather than wait, the powers to be cancelled the show. Is that what they call Show Biz?? the show must go on???,,Oh well.

If there is any change I will post it,however
I will no longer be participating in the Forum as I am moving to Florida by spring time and I want to thank all of you who welcomed me to this nice place where it was through this Forum I was able to hook up with my good friend Jody.

God be with all of you and your loved ones.

Greg and Lisa Sullivan.

They missed out on a great show.

Its simple, yet complicated. Since the room
calls for a maximum of 8 musicians, there is
a complex situation regarding standby musicians. There are rules regarding safety so far as the amount of people in the main room. The other issue is the AFM is asking that additional musicians be on standby which would bring the total of somwhere about
about an extra 8 musicians making that a total of 29 musicians. There would be more musicians than customers, and you think you have heard everything?

It was suggested that the additional 8 standby musicians would be an alternate to the main big band. This would be costly.Add the expense of the artists who would have performed and then enter the AGVA,which brings this to yet another problem regarding taxes etc.

And they wonder why "Big Bands" are out??
I have been a member of Local 802 since 1948
and I have kept up my dues even though I seldom do a gig.I dont owe them.

I am more disappointed because I would have
liked to have had the chance to play steel with a great group of musicians. I have the charts and have been working on my parts.

All this while I was learning "Sugar Time" all over and a nice part on "Sincerely".

And to make matters worse,I was scheduled to play a steel solo with all that brass backing me, which I had planned to have a sound man record for me.

Being in this business all my life, one would
expect I would be used to this, but I'm not.

I'm sorry Greg jumped the gun on posting this
but he meant well and thats what is important to me.

I had my Fender ready to cut through that brass section, but I will have to wait until
this is resolved. Its a good thing it wasn't
advertised as yet, that would have been another problem.

Thats New York for you, whats that saying?
If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere,New York New York.I didnt make it this time.

Thank you Greg, cook up the Corned Beef and Cabbage and we'll do our own thing Maybe
I can get Phyliss and the the girls to stop
by and here I had my tux ready. Phooey.

IMHO the "standby musicians" claus is a throw back to the dinosaur age when musicians often had difficulty getting to a gig. Hence, there was never an empty chair. Why the AFM keeps this antiquated 'law' in their books is a total mystery to me. I wonder if construction workers have that claus ? Think of it...everytime you hire a carpenter or a plumber, you'd have to hire a standby carpenter or plumber just to sit around and pick his nose....?
Further...I sure wouldn't want to be the standby steel guitarist to fill Jody's empty chair! Heck, I still have trouble tuning my guitar farless playing it especially as a substitute to the fabulous one! Hope they resolve the situation to Jody's favor....be great to hear him fronting a Big Band!
